A question on another forum - use 321 or 309 stainless steel for things like S30V ? 309 will take higher temps but does anyone have problems using 321 at 1950 F ??

FWIW, I double wrap all customer blades using 309 for the inner envelope and 321 for the outer.

For my own blades, I use 321 for both. No problems at 1950 - yet - but I'm only willing to risk my own blades.

When House of Tools was doing heat treat, they used 321 and welded the envelope to one of my blades. Can't speak about their overall heat treat practices though - there are horror story rumours - but thats all they are.

Rob!

i ran some 321 at 2150 once and it made it but i will not be doing that again there was nothing left and what was i had to grind off the blade the blade was fine mind you

now that said i do run 321 all the time to 2050 (according to my even heat controller) some times it is a little hard to peel it away after quench but not bad it all comes off
i dont worry about gettign the foil offf till there hand cool and im getting them ready to get in the cryo

Rashid, all that is ,is 321-ti a modification of 304 containing small amounts of Ti. The name 'ticronic' is amusing !!! Whether you call it 321 or 321-ti it's the same thing....Looking at the Mcmaster website the 309 foil is much more expensive than 321 .They only have bags of 309 however.

I use the K&G stuff and it werkz great. It is also easier to work
with, compared to straight 309s, in that it feels more like alum foil .
And the price can not be beaten.

Warning to those who are new to foils: these will cut you and will
cut you BAD unless you're really careful when cutting/folding that foil.

Wear gloves !
