HT issue with magnacut blade?

Hello!

I've got a custom in magnacut with a one and a half inch section that just won't take an edge. Did a full reprofiling twice and still the same. North of it? Shaves. South of it? Shaves. But this one and a half inch strip just at the start of the belly of a large camp knife... just looks like the steel crumbles away there at the very apex. I can see under light that right there the edge looks irregular even though I've gotten a burr on it twice and carefully deburred.

How does that happen? Burnt edge from grinding? Some weird HT issue?

HRC estimated about 61-62.

I don't think I'll return or even complain to the guy about it. But I'd just like to know what's going on with it or if it'll get better!

Thanks!

Hard to say what is going on. Photos would help a lot.
Could be an isolated place that had large grain growth

I would contact the maker. He might have an idea what is happening, and likely would make it good.

Here is another thread on a similar issue with some pro-cut. Not sure it could l be the same issue or not.

Thank you for the responses!

I was intentionally being kinda vague with the info because the smith went a little above and beyond for me so I didn't want to put some bad luck or momentary inattention on blast!

Both potential oxidation and over heating seem very plausible, how deep do these effects go? Will I reach good steel with continued edge grinding? Again just north and south of the problem perform very well, I've used the knife to chop and create kindling with no issues outside of the belly area

This could be a poor heat treat or a bunt edge is difficult to tell. There are also some unknown variables like was this blade heat treated in a kiln? Cryo? No cryo?

It could be heavy decarb just on that section of blade. I’ve seen decarb go as deep as .05 inches. That’s quite a bit of grinding.
