Well I'm going to build a HT oven, do I have to use firebrick or can I use Satanite? I was thinking either casting a complete chamber or casting slabs to be used to make the chamber to allow for expansion.

Will 1" of kaowool and 1" of satanite be enough insulation/refractory?

I want to use what I have on hand cause I'm lazy and cheap :p

Will,

I think that 1" of Satanite is WAY too thick. It will crack on ya pretty fast.

The Satanite is mainly used to seal the Kaowool fibers.

I have 2" Kaowool in one of my forges with about 1/8 - 3/16" coating of Satanite.

Maybe someone with more knowledge than I will chime in and offer suggestions.

Hope to see you at Batson's.

Haven't used satanite before, but for the HT oven I built, I used soft refractory bricks. Easy to shape and cut to fit the frame you built. You can rub the bricks together to get a uniform fit with the brick dust filling the gaps. Also, for any other larger gaps, I used furnace cement to plug 'em up.

The brick construction has more than adequate for my application, and with the tight brick fit, tadpole gasket on the door, and one piece main oven body I folded out of sheet steel, I am able to get up to 1500 degrees steady state in 5 minutes. The little guy is a rocket!

FYI, for the door, I used angle aluminum to form a square channel piece, riveted a piece of sheet steel to the outside, and STUFFED the door with fiber/glass insulation material. Around the seams, I installed a woven tadpole gasket for the seal.
