HT oven

I am building a HT oven and am down to the thermocoupler and element. How far does the thermocoupler need to extend into the heat chamber. I have a 12 inch K coupler with ceramic insluators that can be shortened easly? Next the thermocoupler connector where it connects the coupler and the coupler wires looks to me to be a good connection device for the element wires and the power wires. The ceramic insluator would attach to the back of the oven via screws just like the t-coupler. Anyone know why this will not work or is a bad idea? BCS has a insluating board that is about 4x6 or something but seams overkill and bulky. I want to do this only once, any opinions will be appriciated. Thanks
