I have been HT'g in a pipe with wood in it and works very well. The problem I am having, I am burning the pipes up. The last one I coated with ITC-213 and the wall was 1/4" thich. I have a pipe that T-Blade gave me with a 1/2" wall that is next. Any other ideas???

How about ceramic chimney/flue pipe? You can get it at most home building centers. It is similar to the heavy kind of fire brick.
I guess it would take longer to heat up, though.

George - ask over on the Outpost too - Tai uses pipe and maybe he can give you some ideas.

I.G I use 1/4" wall - 3" box tubing and it lasts a long time. You need to turn your forge way down when heat treating, I like to adjust mine to where its approx 1550-1650 and then place the tubing in, let it heat up and then do the heat treating, the only real reason for the tubing is to keep the blade from any hot spots. I've been useing the same piece of tubing for about 1 year now.

Normally the pipe is open on the one end. A piece of wood is put in the pipe to burn up the oxygen so the decarb is at a minimum. I've used the pipe in my ht oven with out the wood and it still cuts down on the decarb somewhat......

Raymond, is the reduction in decarb enough to justify aquiring a suitable pipe open on one end for electric oven use? Have you tried it in the oven for ss HT? Thanks

EDIT: I wonder if a small piece of brown paper bag would help a lot for oven use. Perhaps its ignition might cause low pressure in the pipe causing fresh oxygen to rush in. I don't know.

Larry: In the morning I am going to this hardware store that is going out of business. He has a assortment of file that he is selling at $2.00 a pop. I bought 20 files and he gave them to me for $35. I just got one of the same files for MSC for $17. This place even had 2X72 belts 10 for $5 only had 50 grit left. O-1 1/8" x 3" X 18"@ $10, $27 in MSC. Should be back by 11:00am.

Roger,
I think you'd be better of bagging your stainless although I've never tried it in the pipe. I'm thinking 1900 plus would really break down the pipe pretty fast.

hey IG i dind't make it today too much junk to do. try not to take all of the drill bits ay? i'm gonna drop by monday morning to get what i can for bits and such off him. p.s. the lathe cutting bits are right past the drill bits in the metal draws on the shelf

Happy shopping...and they say that the day after Thanksgiving is no longer the busiest shopping day of the year.

That a BOY.:D :D
Yep, that is my problem running the forge to hot. I have a digital controler and thermocoupling I will be using from now on. I can dial it right in with the gate valve that I added to the blower setup.:o :o :o
