I have had the wild idea of using pipe filled with sand for heat treating. I got the idea from a class at Campbell with Don Fogg where he and Chuck put sand in the bottom of the forge for heat treating the swords.
I have wanted to build a forge just for heat treating long material with a pipe filled with sand in the center. I can't decide if it should be upright where the open top of the pipe would be used or a lay down type with the pipe open at the top (creating a 'U'). Has anyone tried something like that?
My hold up has been the temperature guage. The only ones I've seen have been really expensive. Anyone know where we could obtain a simple thermometer that would read in the 2000 dregree range?
Thanks, Lynn
