TGIF!!! To top it off, I received a nice package from AG Russell today! This week I ordered the knife I have been lusting over for a LONG time!! All I can say is it was totally worth the wait! The wife is hitting the gym early tomorrow, so now is my time to play with this thing! :)

I received a brand new Madd Maxx 5.5 SAO in satin. This thing is a beast!! It is very well balanced, and looks simply amazing!!

First Impressions:

Size - It is LARGE. I knew it was over 11", but it seems much larger in real life then in all the pics I have looked at over the past year or two. Somehow it feels half a foot smaller than my Ti-lite, yet is larger (but lighter) than my ER nemesis. Compared to that knife, I guess I would liken it to a broadsword compared to a katana. Somehow the Maxx feels lighter and "quicker" than the ER. I will have to see how EDC works out... I carried it tonight when I Went out with the wife, and it felt great; it never bothered me, but I knew it was there...

Finish - What a be-u-ty! I have been on a evil black knife kick, and this thing seems like the crown jewel! This is my first S30V knife, and it is razor sharp out of the box. I will have to let you know how it holds up to the light tasks I put blades through... The carbon fiber inlay is a nice touch for sure!

Action - I got the assisted model and this things fires open with a loud THUNK. I thought the Tilite and ER sounded substantial, but this things resonates throughout my house. The lock is the nicest liner lock I have ever seen on a knife. This is the first assisted knife I have had since a bought a Gerber Fastdraw 8 years ago (broke it in Moab). It is kinda surreal having a knife this size pop open like that for me...

Well, I broke a new plane when I bought this knife. I an think of a couple firearms that I would consider in the price range, but you get what you pay for. All in all it was worth the price!!! This is the nicest knife I have ever handled... I hope I don't get the DDR custom bug.... ;);)

Pics now...

My small collection (sans Boker AF FD which is in for repair):

Congratulations! Sweet looking knife, and great photos. I appreciate the size comparsion w/other knives.

You have great taste in knives and guns.

I dig the Jericho 941 (Baby Eagle). It's my sidearm of choice.

Why thank you kind sir!!

Don't want to get too off topic, but I love it. I currently have three 9mm's, and it is my favorite. The single action trigger is a wonder to behold...

Shame they never really caught on... You don't see too many of them and everyone that has shot it has never had a bad thing to say about it. Def a keeper...

There's a lot of awesomeness in those pictures. Congrats on the new Madd Maxx!

I really like this knife, but I'd also like to see tip up carry options, especially considering wave opening is practically built in.

It is worth the money for all parties involved that you DIY or send your knife to a gunsmith/knifemaker/machinist and have your pocket clip placed exactly where you want it. On this size knife with the foldover clip it comes with, I'd mount it so between approx 1.5" of butt is exposed outside the pocket and it needs a lanyard for more retention material on wave draw. I ordered a custom HD Maxx 5.5" recurve tanto from Darrel at a show in 09. I should have further specified that I wanted a manual though he build me the only HD Maxx that was drilled/tapped for L/R tip up carry. I ended up removing the parts and grinding off the non-waving flipper. It's currently waiting for Reese to lower the clip location and make the CF less grippy at clip rub points.

Nope, deleted them when I reloaded Vista.

I've been looking at them for a while, I think I'll probably pick one up. I'm definitely going to drill it for tip up carry though.

I'm an experienced machinist, I think I can swing it :p That said, if he offers it tip up, I'd take him up on it.

Ah, well even so, it would be more convenient to just have it done before you get your hands on it. Shoot him an email. He's quite personable. I'm sure he can accommodate.

OK... After carrying all day today I have two small observations...

First, I need to hit the lock area with some CLP. It opens with such force that it is damn near impossible to unlock sometimes. It should get better with time and wear...

Second, all skinning my knuckles on the hilt every time I reach into my pocket confirms that the scales need to be drilled and tapped for tip up carry. It is a pain to get things in and out of the pocket with the near 2" hilt taking up most of my pocket opening (from jeans). Forget the iPhone and keys, I almost pulled the knife out of my pocket by accident when I reached for my movie ticker stub to show the usher... That would have been great :) I will be dropping this off to my Gunsmith for a quick fix next Saturday...

Still in love though... As my wife will tell you, nothing is perfect! :)

I had the black manual action and loved it. But what I really want is the bowie blade configuration. I emailed the HTM shop and got an estimate on one that, to me, is very reasonable. I also specified tip up carry with the clip mounted as high as it will go since I want to carry the entire knife within my pocket with nothing but clip showing.

It will definately be this summer before I am able to go through with this, but I'm glad to know that it can be done for a slight premium.:D

Just got a call from Reese a couple days ago... My HD Maxx along with a SS w/rayskin Hawk should be coming my way in a week.

I have the all black assisted version and I sent it in to DDR with a small fee and he converted it to tip up carry for me. Fantastic knife as I EDC it everyday.
