The Hudson Bay Tobacco Box...

The story behind it is kinda cool...

The Voyageurs enjoyed their tobacco pipes. They would row for an hour and break for 10-15 minutes to smoke. They used flint, steel and a pinch of char to light up. Every once in a while a piece of burning char would drop between the bundles (which were bound with burlap and twine) and set the whole load ablaze. This was obviously bad for business so the HBC produced a solution. The Hudson Bay Tobacco Box with a burning lens in the lid. They were issued to the Voyageurs, who were instructed to use the lens to light their pipes whenever it was feasible to do so.

I've been on the fence regarding the BR Hudson Bay Campknife II, but this pic made me pull the trigger!

Now I'll have to wait for it to cross the pond.
I don't really need one, but this is a historically interesting model for any collection.

Here is my original "Chief" or "Camp" knife.


It has been sharpened many times...


Do you think this is the original handle? Brass and what looks like maple.

Blade is about 8 inches, 13 inches total. 5/16 inches thick at the handle.

Blade is flat one side and beveled on the other side.

It's "chipped" and reveals a layer of steel over iron (poor quality steel ??)


I'd like to know the period that the Hudson Bay Company used this FOX logo on their ware.?????

What a great idea for a thread.

I used to get a Canadian magazine called "The Beaver" it was chocked full if Voyager Era infomantion. They changed the name for obvious reasons in today's world. I don't remember what they call it now. But it was a great resource. Maybe a brother to the north will chime in with the new name.

I find it interesting how similar the traditional Hudson Bay camp knife is to a bowie.

People like to say that large camp knives are a new fad but they're older than Bowie and still used the world over to great effect. I don't carry one because they're too heavy but they sure are effective if you don't mind the weight.
