Hudson Bay Company Brass Tinder Box-Loaded with fire kit

I have used one for many years. I use a thin oval piece of pigskin (because it is thinner than buckskin) leather to match the bottom shape that I put my charcloth under as suggested. I also cut a another piece that goes under the inside of the lid. I always felt that my glass would then be protected. You can then pull the leather pad out and use it to hold your flint in your palm while you knap a sharper edge on your flint to make the steel spark better.

I need to make a pouch fom my new HB Tinder box, your's looks great.

Tow linen (the white hairy material in the photo) is very inexpensive (I purchase it by the pound) and will bird nest real good bursting into flames with the introduction of lively char. Just another option, alternative, addition to something like jute.

Where do you get it?

Nice "stuff," Rick. I really like those little fire steels.
I got half a dozen from my neighbor a while back and they are all BIG.
Been looking for something more compact.

Love the beaver button on the one pouch. I saved one of those for years and can't find it and haven't seen on in a long time - the one with the faceted edge.

I picked up the striker with the darker flint chip. The rest of it is some I have had for a while.

Thanks.
Most of what we find lying about here is small and seemingly not as hard compared to what I have had shipped to me from afar.

Rick, nice looking kits, an inspiration to be sure.

Are these fire steels? Where can I get a couple?

Thanks Rick. I'm kind of a fire steel nut, I bet I have 7 or 8 of them, never wore one out yet but I'm trying.

I'm trying to get my forge set up, maybe I could get some pointers on steel and heat treating for fire steels. I have a great anvil given to me by the towns blacksmith for some leather work I did for his custom chopper, and I've been collecting hammers and tools to get me started making my own BS tools. I worry a little that this bum arm will keep me from doing serious work but steels and knives souldn't be to hard on me.
