The search for quench oil within budget continues in my shop--at this point, even AMC Tool and Carbide in Pensacola have told me Houghton K quench would run me about almost 60 bucks a gallon (minus shipping) and so I'm still on the hunt for a 7-second quenching oil.
As I was, again, scrolling the pages of search results for the keyphrase "Quenching Oil," the following link was plastered at the top of the page:

1,500 dollars for 55 gallons of Passion lubricant, BUT it comes with a pump.

Sorry if this is inappropriate or fails to elicit a laugh--I'm in a down mood after losing out on a free 260lb Kohlsaw anvil and this actually got me to laugh despite the heartache.

I found the Passion Lube left my blades to stiff.

Have you tried contacting Houghton directly? My 5gal pail was delivered to my door for $125.

LOL why in gods name would you need that much lube... I guess maybe for the playboy mansion or something lol.

Contact Kelly Cupples, this is from the last steel list I got from him in September so prices maybe different and don't recall what shipping was but Kelly can give you current pricing.

Tried Houghton and Maxim--Houghton's quote for 5gal K quench to my door was 188, Maxim's quote for #50, five gallons, was a little a little more...

Edit: just saw Mike's post--I'll try giving Kelly a call this week. Thank you, Mike--for the info and for lending me an ear the other night...

Weird, have Maxim's prices been going up a lot or something? I recall paying about $130 shipped to me, cant see why shipping would run $50 or more extra to Valdosta.

Count and Jav--agreed, but shipping isn't the issue. There's extra shipping costs involved to Lowndes County because of HazMat. Even the local weld shop that actually does some in house hardening will pay to send certain pieces to HT services over the cost of ordering in even a 5-gallon bucket--according to the owner, his last 55 gallon drum was only somewhere in the ballpark of 1,500, but the hazmat was another 1,500.

Our reloading community has dwindled due to the few folks capable of, or getting from someone who drives to Tallahassee, Fla. or Perry, Ga to get powder. A 5lb jug of Hodgen's classic will run an extra hundred in shipping.
For a 5 gallon bucket from Houghton, the specifics of that oil were going to ping me almost 40 dollars in hazmat for delivery, which is why I tried for someone closer with AMC--the 1 gallon would have only gone for 15 in hazmat fees.

Sounds like the only real option is going to be having it shipped to the next relative or friend you're planning to visit in another less restrictive county.

Sorry, wish I was closer and could help. Being from Georgia myself, I definitely know how much of a PITA things can be from one county to the next.

Javand--looks like that's the plan pending what Kelly says this week.
And thank you all the same for the help--forget the quenching oil, if you were closer I'd sweep the floors and scrub scale for a few lessons.

I got my oil from McMaster Carr. It is 11 second oil I think, I only use it for O1. If I remember correctly it was only around $60 for five gallons. I just looked and it is just under $80 plus shipping currently.
