I'm going to visit Hungary this summer. We're going to start in Budapest, and then head north into the provinces to visit Sarospatek (sp?), near Tokaj. I would like to bring back a sharp souvenir, but I don't know a thing about Hungarian knives or knifemakers. Could anyone help me out?

You're in for a treat, my friend! Hungary is a very, very, very beautiful country. Rich in history, architecture, traditions, etc. I spent two weeks there, in ~2002, mostly in Budapest (Buda side). Visited the Castle, went to a classical music concert, took a dip in the baths at hotel Gellert, visited 2 or 3 museums (Heroes Square?), walked the famous Vaci Utca, ate a sandwich at café Gerbeaud...I could've spend 3 months just walking in the streets of the city, and trying the different restaurants. Went to Debrecen over the weekend, to enjoy thermal baths and visited this city as well.

I brought back this traditional folder made by Szankovitz; they had a booth somewhere on Vaci Utca. Maybe they're still there? I believe there's many custom knifemakers in Hungary.

Have a wonderful trip!!!

That's pretty cool. I'd love to find a custom maker and visit his shop. Any other thoughts on souvenirs I should pick up while I'm in town?
