Hey guys, I started a thread asking for people's thoughts on hunters in the Custom Section, and it occurred to me that there's not a hell of a lot of cross-pollination that occurs betwixt here and there (which, frankly, is nothing short of absurd, as we're the g&$@@mn custom knifemakers!!!!).

Either way, I think the guys that make custom knives should have something to say there, so please check it out:

Matthew, I'm not sure of what you want. A have been making a few "folding hunters" since long ago no longer making the straight ones. blade sizes run from 3"-4" and handle scales are most often the artificial materials with G10 and micarta often used. I also do use mammoth ivory, mammoth bone but avoid the mammoth tooth for these knives because I feel it's a little on the easy breakable size. The handle shapes often include a finger notch with a "guard" at that forward point. I use the liner type of lock and sometimes do have two blades. For steals I use M390, CPM154, and AEB-L but do realize that there are also others that will provide a very desirable cutting edge. I like grinds that run bottom to top with very near zero edges, and usually stay with the 1/8" - 5/32" thickness in either flat or hollow grind.
Hope this gets going interest in what you are looking for.
Frank

Thanks Frank, but I was hoping you'd participate in the other thread that I linked to! Seems to me that more custom makers should be represented in that forum, and I thought this would be a good way to get folks over here to participate over there!

I upsized 5 of my favorite patterns to have blades from 3 3/4" to 5 1/2".
Besides that they are replica patterns of traditionals I'm calling them folding
hunters simply because the overall size of the knife is now pretty big- esp.
for slipjoints. That being said I have'nt dressed any deer that I've taken for
40ish years with a knife I didn't make. My favorite "deer knives" are 5 inch
fixed bladed knives.

These 2 knives see most of the work on deer though if one or the
other isn;t with me I just use a slipjoint. The Box Elder handled knife
has been pictured here and other forums numerous times. I think I
actually prefer the Oak crotch handled knife. The blued one is cold blued
01, the other Ats-34.

I agree - whole-heartedly.
It's like they're two entirely different worlds, yet, in fact, they're joined at the hip.
