Lost interest for over a year with axes. Here's the first one with hopes of doing more. The head was forged from a piece of landing gear from a bush plane. There's a story that goes along with that but won't go into it now. The head is 5160, just over 5" with a 3" cutting edge. Handle is stab. curly hickory and its 14".

Boy is that ever nice Ray  What a sweet package that would be if the knife were included ;)

I like the distinctive hamon on the ax. Is it finished differently from the body or is it just that way from heat treat? Either way, it looks like a very well made, very effective tool. The knife too.

Great Ax, I do not believe I ever seen one of your blades that I didn't think was fantastic! Steven

While on another forum I mentioned how much I liked this ax Ray. Now you have me wondering. You probably shouldn't said "There's a story that goes along with that but won't go into it now." because I won't get any sleep tonight until you tell me how you lost the gear on your favorite bush plane while jousting with a bull moose. Well, I bet your story is a lot better than that!

Nice Job Ray,, you didn't lose anything in the year off from them  then again, it's like riding a bike right:) I can't see you losing your game:thumbup: :)

Thats just beautiful. I love how simplistic and functional it looks while still being all class.

Excellent as always Ray. You have a great sense of style. Always classy, never complicated.

That's beauticul Ray.....As usual

Now ...first, how did you get the hammon to curve and
second, what's the story?

Don, I'm still working on the story. It will be a goodone!

As for the hamon it just did it itself. I just heated the front part of the head in the forge and when the color looked right I quenched. I'm really shocked to see the temperline myself since the steel is 5160. I used horse grade mineral oil for my quench. By far the worst smelling quench I have used.

Just great!!! Makes me even more anxious to get going on the whole forging thing! Thanks, 47 Knuck

That axe looks great. Sounds like you really lucked out on the temper line.

But why would someone stabilize hickory?

I guess when you own Gallery Hardwoods you do as you damm well please. Larry gave me the hickory to try out. I do think that the stabilizing will make it tougher and cut down on the amount of splinters. The stabilizing was done with the wood natural in color. I was really surprised that I could get it to color.
