I've been looking for a knife that can serve two roles, a skinning/gutting knife for deer and a camp knife for occasional backpacking trips. Defiantly want a fixed Blade with a 3-4inch blade length. Ive been eying up the esee 3, izula 2, boker bk24 d'eskabar and the tops tom brown scout. Any recommendations? Thanks-Jake

I don't own one but I'm sure impressed by the reviews and what I read here of the TOPS B.O.B.

My favorite style for outdoors is a leuku---Jack of all trades.

Of those you MENTION, I"d go with the d'Eskabar and avoid anything "Tom Brown."

eskebar and the esee would be great for your uses.

I would not want more blade for dressing deer and they are both light and tough. the becker is more affordable.

I have a hard time deciding which one to carry for hiking/backpacking.

If you go eskebar make sure to order the handles.....huge difference. did not use mine until then.

I own the Tops B.O.B. and it is great, but most backpackers would probably think it's too heavy. Seems like a Mora gives you most of the capability of a rugged knife with a greatly reduced weight. A BK14 would be a little heavier than a Mora but be pretty much indestructible like the Tops.

I personally chose the Esee Laserstrike for the tasks that you mentioned. I've used it to field dress game, build shelters and for fire starting. Never used it to baton, bcuz I quite honestly don't agree with batoning with a knife, but I have no doubt that it could handle it, as could any of the Esee models. I just chose the Laserstrike bcuz its blade shape was more suitable for my needs

If you can find an old Cold Steel Master Hunter in Carbon-V they would suit your needs. A BRKT Bravo 1 would be another I would recommend.

The Eskabar is a great little knife. I have field dressed a few deer with one. My 'go to' hunting knife is a Spyderco Mule Team. It is PERFECT for field dressing and skinning. Since it is FFG it slices great too. Also look at Battle Horse Knives.......

I would look into a Becker BK16 or a JK Element O1 (EO1).

Honestly, John from JK Knives could make you what you want for comparatively little funds spent for quality gained in F&F and his HT protocol.

The Tops BOB is a great knife, but I wouldn't want it to my dedicated skinning knife, thou it would work for one in a pinch. For a all in one camp tasks/skinning knife I'd take my bk16 over the tops BOB.

Also for those recommending the bravo 1, you'd be better off looking at the bravo 1 lt.

Do you have a strong preference regarding grind? Hollow? Full flat? Sabre grind? Convex?

Fallkniven kolt, sk 1 jarl, nl 5 idun, hk 9, tk 1,2 & 5. Blades range from 3.5" - 4.0" on those listed here. Fallkniven makes some great models and have some new offerings due out soon as well, with a phenomenal steel. Lam CoS steel has impressed the hell out of me. I'm kinda jaded so take that into account.

Izula 2. With a wedge it's actually pretty good at splitting kindling if you happen on a campsite that sells firewood. It really hits the balance of small yet "full sized."

If you are really going to backpack with it then the Mora is a great knife. Lots of capability in a relatively small and lightweight package.
