hunting coyotes

We hunt them mostly in the fall and through the winter. The snow makes them easy to see and we have lots of pheasants for them to eat. I usually use mouth calls, mainly dying rabbit. Here is one that my son and I got last year in September. Shot her with a Savage in .223.

A lot of great info guys, thanks.Anybody have any favorite calls, preferably something easy to start out with.;)

Nice pelt on that one Minnshooter!

I liked the wood barrel Weems cottontail a lot, and have a Faulk jackrabbit, but have been making my own for a while now and kind of forget which ones I bought before. I do remember the only plastic one I ever did anything with consistently was a Circe (sp?). I bought wood calls for the most part.

I made some from antler and they work fine as well for sound, but my fit and finish work needs refinement. I'll probably never get into making them to sell but it's satisfying to use one you've made.
Check out http://allpredatorcalls.com/ they have fair prices, good articles and I love the magazine. They are also who started distributing the reeds I use for making calls. Very good people.
A fun forum is Texas Predator Posse, lots of good info and stories(of course), plus there are some vendors on there that offer up at times.

Dad and I had good success calling them in with a rabbit call in the prairies running trapline or scouting new areas in the summer.

Semi auto .22 winchester magnum with a 4x scope did real well. so did the .243.

where in Minnesota?

As my name implies I love it. Can't say I'm very succesful however. Our ranch's 10 ft high fence usually keeps them out. I did call one that was in our neighbor's pasture. I actually went calling the other day and called some kind of cat, most likely a feral cat, into about 500 yards. I also called a bobcat on my friends ranch.

I live in the pacific northwest and we are kinda having a problem with coyotes. I shot one the other day in my yard. my old dog was barking at something and then I heard her growling. this is something she never really does. I grabbed the shotgun and out the door I went. As soon as I got about half way across my yard I was already pumping shots. I called one of my buddies over and he took it home. I think he skinned it. I don't actually hunt them, but I don't want my 13 year old dog getting eaten by one either.

yotehunter that is a bob not a feral. minnesota thats a big yote. they trapped one in austin ---weighed 85 lbs. this was recorded by a state biologist. some callers take a shotgun along with the long reach gun, they have called yotes up to 30 yds & use the scatter with b.b.s. we were fairly successful in rabies control by dropping from helicopters dog food laced with oral rabies serum. if you can brave cold wheather & set still winter hunting due to lack of cover is more productive.

I find that any kind of call that mimics a wounded rabbit works well. Other than that a good hiding spot, good scope and making sure and scents are masked will do the trick.

Coyote shot while deer hunting after it had a chased a doe through a cut over all evening long, I let the doe walk or run but the yote got it, it is now mounted and stands guard in the conference room at my office where it faces the front door to welcome people coming in. It has scared the hell outta of several to say the least.

the bottom pic is Sadie my 6 month blue tick who is sleeping in her chair in the back of my office right now.

Point is I'm a dog lover and yote killer, there is no real comparison. Yotes are horrible on game populations especially turkey and deer. With all the land managment now ongoing across teh south where i hunt game populations are exploding as habitat is being extremely well managed and carrying capacities are rising. Predators are rising right along with em. Shoot those yotes on sight, same with bob cats. Gotta go I've got a Bob Cat watching me right now.

When we hunt yotes exclusively we sometimes have success with putting out tinks 69 doe in heat regardless of time of year, just use a lot of it the smell brings em in.

This cat crawled out of knot hole in a tree next to me at eye level about 22 feet up, one night while deer hunting, the tree was only about ten feet away from the tree I had climbed. It walked face first down the tree and stretched out at the foot of the tree I was sitting in. Needless to say we walked out together.
