Recommendation? Hunting fixed blade

IMG_0055.jpeg

Buck 119, 105, 110 Folding Hunter
Grohmann #1 Stag, Grohmann #3 Rosewood

All are fantastic hard use field knives and are reasonably priced. I really like that all can do big game very well and all but the Buck 119 are also nimble enough for small game and birds.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I learned some new brands and makers.

I really like Erickson knifeworks and it probably would have been my pick but with currency exchange it’s a bit much for a birthday knife. My wife and I have 3 little kids and one big mortgage so try to keep a cap on gifts at the moment.

I’d never heard of cudeman but after perusing them for a while I settled on the Cudeman akeley. My wife has ordered it, I spoke to Cudeman and there are none in stock but are currently in production.

Looking forward to it, again thanks all.

If you expand horizons on handle material or just skeletonized. The esee izula comes in 1095 or s35vn now. Not very expensive. I used moras, cold steel/buck lock backs. They work but folders are harder to get gunk out. Last several seasons I used the izula, small compact where you can keep your finger along the spine for gutting and control when reaching in the cavity for the esophagus. Izula gets my vote or something similar.

My birthday is coming up and my wife is happy to buy a knife for me…for once.

I typically collect traditional folders but in no way shape or form is she going to be jumping hoops to try for a GEC drop or anything like that. So I figure, a new fixed blade for an upcoming hunting trip would

I won’t bother with price as currency exchange and freight makes any figures moot, but she’s not going to be paying custom money. So I’m really looking at production models, I was looking at some puma and boker stag knives and a couple out of France but I thought I’d check and see what suggestions folks on here have.

Appreciate any

Where are you at Jack? That makes a big difference, as you've noted. There may be something you can source closer to home.

That being said, this is the pattern I used when I was hunting. This is a Bob Loveless drop point hunter, as made by Beretta under his license. They can be had within your price range. I used one like this with a synthetic handle in my kitchen for years, and I've owned more than a few customs in this pattern (see my avatar).

I’m in Australia mate, that is a lovely design. for whatever. Reason excessive freight seems to go one way. I sent 4kg of antler to a knife maker in the states for $120. Getting even a folder here from the states cost $80-100.

Check out silver stag knives, they use tons of nice stag and d2 steel. Very good hunting knives made by hunters, hold a great edge and they are beautiful.

My birthday present turned up today.

It is a very beautiful knife. Quite weighty and the stag is very nice.

Thank you all for the suggestions.

Might be something to that on the shipping. I use to ship a lot of my knives to Australia. Lots. Nowadays just occasionally. Looks like ya got a very nice one, congrats.

That Cudeman is a beauty! Great looking stag and high polish steel. I've always been attracted to the Loveless knife styling. I hunt small game so I like the smaller more pointy shaped style Loveless types, like A.G. Russells Gents Hunter knife that is 6-7/8" oal. I have ended up locating three of them, one in micarta and two in stag. Also a larger 8" Lone Wolf Loveless micarta and a Russell Easler 7". The shape just feels good in your hand aside from being so attractive.

I've mailed a few knives to members in Australia and New Zealand, and never paid that much. Just checked the rates for a 6 lb priority mail box to Adelaide and that came out to less than $48.00 US. My guess is it's the conversion rate.
