I have never hunt before but my bro-in-law loves hunting deers in Canada.

**shot a few this season**

I'd like to give him a khuk as a gift but I have no idea about which ?

Any suggestions and thanks.

For hunting deer?

You need a guarranteed one-hit killer. I think the Janawar Katne would be a good choice. :foot:

Do you think your bro is going to need it for bushwhacking or for dressing the meat? If it's mainly for dressing game, then you might get him a Sarge/KPH knife. It was designed for taking critters apart. I'm not a hunter, so I don't know much more than what I have been told. I have heard that the parts of the animal that you have to split and cut are pretty soft compared to the other parts. I have heard that in stead of a giant chopper, a small sharp skinner and a set of pruning sheers are pretty good.
Now if you wanted to get something that makes a statement, and your brother doesn't mind packing a lot of weight. You might want to think about the YCS. Yvsa did design this with a total hunting package in mind. Big chopping khuk for things that need to be chopped (probably more to access to the hunting grounds than for the animal itself), a couple of really nice knives for taking the kill apart, and a triangular awl.

Like I said, i don't really know. If it were up to me to go hunting, then I might take something like a Pen Knife or 12" AK for whacking stuff down that got in my way, a Sarge/KPH, and a locking SAK for back up and emergency tools.

Well i'd seen a beheaded skinless deer hanging in the garage once.......

I ain't no hunter....but Jake what do you think bout that scenario ?

Kaz...If I can catch up with deer at my age. :o

I would suggest a small to medium sized Khuk, villager or something similar for cutting shooting lanes (dead limbs) etc if he "still" hunts and an even smaller one of he wants to use it for skinning. The Karda's and the smaller ones are good knives as well.

I think a BAS is the best choice. My opinion is based on the three I have. Its light enough and small enough to not get in the way and carry easily, while maintaining usefulness as a khukuri. Look up what Sarge had to say about the BAS while in Afghanistan. Interesting reading.

If you can still climb a tree, all you'll need to do with the janawar is just fall on the deer.

Andy.....I am thinking of a BAS and/or Pen knife. 15 incher. :)

Kaz....I can still climb a tree but I'd need the whole fire department to get me down. :o

As said, it depends on what the kukri is wanted/ needed for. For beheading, something of decent size would do it. For dressing the game, a Jure would work, a small Pen Knife would probably also fit the bill.

Of the Khukurri for skinning ? The penknife looks versatile for somerone fairly adept . I,ve only seen pics of it and so will leave it to those more in the know . I can say that for skinning/dressing you want a rounded belly with the point back from the cutting edge . You also want a knife where a small movement at the handle doesn,t result in a large movement at the tip . In other words 16 inch shallow bellied knives are out unless the person has a fair amount of experience .

No one with any alternative is going to skin a deer with a khukuri. The karda is intended for that function traditionally. No western hunter is going to use a karda either. Your bor-in-law may carry the khuk hunting, but it will likely be used for tough chores and another more appropriate knife for skinning.

The YCS was designed by Yvsa as the perfect deer hunting companion IIRC.:o
My suggestion would be to go with that. The main blade is great for chopping through the pelvis and sternum areas. The two different sized karda work great for gutting and skinning of the carcass. Seems the perfect combo for the job.:D

I had a friend back in college who was not at all keen on hunting. He thought that, if you must hunt, you should be allowed only a Bowie knife and a loin cloth. That would mean the Cherokee Rose, accompanied by proper atire, would be a good choice. If a knife is all you get it should be a large one.:D

for hunting in dense cover a smaller khuk is better( say 13 inch or so)..a pen or a similar size would serve well..any bigger and it gets in the way of stalking and climbing..this size would also serve well to split the pelvis when quartering game...

I'm not a hunter, so I have no first-hand experience, but if the knife is only going to be used for small tasks and dressing game, wouldn't the Bilton khukuri suffice?

But if there's the possiblity of heavier tasks, a mid-size khuk may be better overall, or combine the Bilton with a hatchet.

Welcome, C.S.:)
The bilton would do a lot of small tasks fairly well in a pinch, but HI offers some other knives that would do very well for the skinning game. The SARGE/KPH knife is one that was designed to take an animal apart. I carry one almost every day and I don't even hunt:) If you do a search for the R-9 I belive it was designed with skinning in mind. I have one and you could almost pinch it and use it like an ulu.
I would assume that if you wanted to quarter an animal and didn't want to take it apart at the joints or saw it, that a 12-15" khuk would take apart most north american game pretty easily and could be used for rough/emergency chores.
