Hunting Report

Guys, Here is link to deer jaw aging, of course you gotta have them dead first. Jaw aging is used over most of the country but it has it's critics. In your area, body mass and length of the nose might be the most accurate visual indicator of older or younger. Thats about as close as you will get with the eyeball. I use-to-could 'pop' out a jaw almost totally clean more often than not but, other guys were better than me, so I would whip out the ole Buck knife to cut any tissue hanging on after they made their attempt.

I wondered when you were going to check in :D

Nice Deer for sure at that weight. Y'all been feeding them good.

Glad you got one and had the right tools along.

Brother went out and took one. Called me to see if there were any knives in the well house. Had already looked in the little Tracker.

Said the 110 I gave him years ago was dull...lol....
I guess he thought it wouldn't get dull from use over the years...

Might be a while before we get back out. Grandson apparently has a brain tumor they are going to have to go in after in a day or so as soon as all the data is compiled and a game plan is developed.

Maybe we will get that TexMex later on in the season.

Larry, Sorry to hear about the Grandson. Will lift him up in our prayers.
All the deer were fat. They got a good rain in August that helped a lot.
I also used the Buck 120 on the brother-in-laws deer.I can't seem to go hunting with out it.:)BPS-110 is still going strong.I need to get a BG-42
and a s30v to see what all the crowing is about.
Showed the brother-in-law how to sharpen his 110.he like to try to cut bones with his.
Jeff

Nice buck Hawkeye! I'm sure I'm not the only one that really appreciates those pics.
Pack Rat: May God bless your Grandson. I will keep him in my prayers.

luck later.;)

Larry,
The mini--14 will be mucho-goodo for hogs. As a working gun I had a old wood top forend one, put a 3X red dot site on top so you could keep both eyes open. Used a 105 for the filet.
Have shot hog(s) while squirrel hunting with a .22 in oak bottoms.
You have to have kahoonas to sit on the ground or hide behind tree, letting them get closer and closer. Shoot for the ear hole, shoot one only and jump up quick and put in several more so they don't wake up. At about 5 yards they started looking at you and getting nervous. I wouldn't do this with black haired boars....

DM, Yes, you are correct.

300$s.

We are back at it. These birds came out this afternoon early and I pulled down on a bearded hen, but missed. I am going to have to quit taking the high percentage shots I used to be good at. Ya know, the ones where you will either miss or drop em in their tracks.

300,,,,going to take both mini14's out tomorrow for some training shooting. Daughter hit a pig with a .22 mag. She said it did three or four circles and took off. Was right at dark so we didn't find it.

Now she is demanding something with a little more punch, or she threatens to go after them with that thutty ough six. So we will break out the mini's. Now I suppose she will want a scope on it ..... oh well...:D

And while we were looking for the pig, we found a really nice 8pt that had gotten himself tangled up in the fork of a tree when he was sharpening his rack. Looked he had been there three or 4 weeks. Too bad because it was a nice rack. So now the son in law has some fine rattling horns. He thought later we should have shot some pics before he untwisted it out of that tree.

Sounds like a lot of fun Pack Rat. I wish I had some pigs to chase!! I'll be calling (at least attempting) to call bobcats in far eastern Kentucky this coming week. It's in the heart of the elk re-intro area, so it should be a lot of fun.

2TB,
And everyone else who do not have hogs, it sounds really fun when folks down here in south talk about shooting and eating hogs. BUT, you do NOT,NOT,NOT want them in your area. They DESTROY (eat) plants and animals and breed rapidly. You will lose your ground nesting birds (Quail, Woodcock, Turkeys, even baby Bobcats, etc.) to there depredations and lose all manners of small animals that make for a good ecosystem, and you will lose plant habitat to large spots of torn up rooting that looks like living room sized bomb craters.
Almost everyone who saw and care about the property they hunt before hogs will shake their heads and wish they never had them.
Any wildlife manager with a ounce of sense will tell you NOT to introduce them and they would kill them all if they could figure out a way.

There I feel better........300Bucks

300,Your sooo correct. I've dealt w/ it and its not nice. DM

We had a good day today, I took two hens out of another flock of about 25 birds. And the daughter took her first bird. I was pretty impressed, took it at almost 100 yards without tearing up the meat.

I think she likes my little .17 with that 12x50 scope :)

No hogs today. We were all laying for them. Weather turned off sunny and hot this afternoon, so nothing was moving much.

The birds are in the freezer and we ground all but the legs and breast for turkey burgers.

I won't post pics of all the rest of the birds we saw Jeff. :D

This is the best year we have had in quite a few for turkey, so maybe the hogs haven't found their nesting spots as yet.

The birds dressed up really fast with the bg42 Fiji custom.... It disappeared once and I looked around and the youngest granddaughter (14) was dissecting the heart and gizzard of one of the birds. She had already peeled out the craw and gone through it. She is the one that wants to be a vet. gotta love it.... She told her Dad she wanted to do her moms bird, but he got in a hurry. With that kind of interest, there is a couple of pink bucklites at home. One is the 112 size that she will have by next trip out.

Nite yall....4:30 comes early...on hunting time :D

O.K. I'll withdraw my wish for pigs to shoot. A hog farmer friend of mine called me a few years back to have me dispatch an old sow that was loose. Other crop farmers had been complaining about it rooting in their fields, so I can understand the problems with them. I dropped it with a 7mm Rem mag.
Turkeys with a .17 sounds like fun. We can't use rifles for them here. You may have seen in the news where the oldest woman in the world recently died. I occasionally coyote hunt what used to be her farm. It is now her grandsons/great grandsons land. Great family.

Here is a trail cam pic of the deer I took with a bow. It was taken two days prior to harvest. I didn't know the pic was on my trail cam until after I shot it. It was a nice suprise.
