Hunting Those Elusive Bucks

Hello All,

Being new to collecting Bucks, I wonder just "where" they are found.:D
Of course I cruise that famous online auction site hunting those elusive prizes for my collection, but there MUST be other sources. Ocassionally I see someone post a pic of a knife they have purchased that I have never seen available anywhere and I wonder where they "found" it. Yes, I know there are many, many Ebay Stores and Dealers hosted on that site as well, but I wonder just what other sources are out there that I an unaware of at this time. I know this is like asking "Where do you catch all your fish?" and you may be reluctant to share the location of your favorite "fishin hole", but I thought I would ask anyway.:o Pawn shops and garage sales cant be the only other locations. Anyone care to reveal??:)

thanks!

Gun shows. The guns and militaria are just as fun to study as the knives! Better than going to a movie. Good hunting, ss.

Something a club member once told me was that when he goes to an old mom and pop sporting goods store, hardware store, or tackle shop, he asks them if they have any Buck knives even if he does not see any in the store. A couple of times they had an old display in the back room. Its worth asking the question.
My sons and I hit the garage sales just about every weekend and I have only seen Buck knives at one, and we are in knife country up here. I dont think anyone sells them!

I have found many knives at gun shows. I would also recommend attending some of the shows where BCCI members are showing their knives. Getting to know other members who have the same interest may help in finding those knives without going out to some of the on line auctions. A lot of the members have doubles of some of their knives. Trades are always good.

To expand on Jerry's comments, networking is probably the highest percentage way to find knives. Once people find out what you collect and you find out what they collect you can put the word out about what you need. Getting to know the dealers helps also. About a year ago a dealer I know who collects Buck knives put a rare knife up for auction on ebay. I didn't want the knife but I was interested in why he, a collector, would sell such a rare knife. It turns out he had been asked by a club member to sell about thirty rare Buck knives. As it turned out I was able to buy several knives I needed before they went up for sale to the general public just because I knew that dealer well enough to ask a question when something seemed out of place. You aso need to get to know the dealers who will take in older Buck knives for sale then keep bugging them so you get first crack at the good stuff that comes along. Another strategy is to become knowledgeable about the knives you collect. The people who need information will find you and you can do them favors by answering their questions. In turn you may get offered some knives that others won't get a shot at because you have helped them in the past.

Another great place to find old knives, guns, computers, or motorcycles is your local bar (or coffee shop). I have lost track of the number of times I've sat in the Walmore Inn/Judy's/Tin Pan Alley/Denny's etc talking about something I just bought [motorcycle, computer, gun] and someone down the bar will say, "Heck, I've got one of those. I'll sell it to you for $40!!!", or something similar...(True story - I bought a complete 1976 Honda CB550 for $40...no title, but Hey! - I didn't complain!)... :D

Just let people know what you're interested in...Wear a Buck hat, or a BCCI T-shirt, greet the bar and show whatever you're interested in...Talk it up and act enthusiastic...I had a fellow barfly actually drive home and bring back a laptop computer for me...(that one set me back a bit more than $40...but not much more)... :)

2 words...

Larry Oden :D

He is the best! He will even watch for certain knives if you let him know what you want! He has gotten more of my "hard to finds" than anyone or anywhere else!

ya gota get a buck hunt dog also...
like my yorkys and the buck beagles...
take them to the afore mentinon locations and let them sniff and when they let you know one is close they will distract the owner while ya get the best price cause ya got a real cute dog...
that and ask every one you see... yep buck hats shirts all help
but ya gota have a buck dog ... other wise it jest ant right...

I've been buying my knives since the early 80's. When I was a knife dealer setting up at gunshows, I came across the majority of my collection from people who were looking to trade or sell. I had a sign on my table "wanted older Buck knives". I did the shows for 8 years but now being a custom maker with a long backlog, I just don't have the time to do shows anymore.

Some one mentioned Larry olden in another thread about 5 1/2 inch blade 119s. Who is this Larry Olden and how is he found? Does he have a web site?

I went to a number of yard sales over the weekend and didn't see a single knife :( but I did pick up a nice air compresser for $20 :D

I use my air compressor as much or more than any tool in the garage. Got one of those fancy reel thingies and hung it in the ceiling rafters where the hose is out of the way and will wind its self back up. Wife uses it about as much as I do.

Hey KY...

Larry is like a "Esteemed Yoda Level 99 Buck Jedi" around here.

One of those guys where if he says the sky is blue because he says so, you just go "ok".
He reminds me of this really cool guy at this watering hole I go to. By choice; he sits alone, drinks alone, rides alone, everyone likes him, no one will mess with him, doesn't say much...but when he does, peeps listen.

The name is ODEN. Larry Oden. Shaken, not stirred.
Do a search for his name and drop him a line. Buck sales rep or distributor...220, 230, whatever it takes.
He also has a consignment list of knives for sale.

This is my first shop type compressor. I'm looking at all the toys I can get to go along with it.... impact wrench, power ratchet, air grinder....

Pawn Shops can be good for knives or guns. The usual everyday kinda stuff the guy will know prices probably pretty good, but if a guy knows what he is looking at sometimes you can get a real deal. A Buck made in the 60's or 70's may be priced the same as one made last year. Second hand stores can be too especially the mom and pop ones. I have Puma Bowie I paid $30 for made in the 60's isn't prefect but I can and do use it. Also a Forchner that was $89 at the mall I picked up in a Goodwill for 89 cents. It is my favorite steak cutting knife on deer and elk. To me it is fun just looking and once in a while you find a great buy.

I get a lot of my Bucks from pawn shops as well. In Arizona they have a lot of knives coming through so some of the pawn shops are selling them for 50% off their ticketed price. Most times the ticketed price is too much but for 50% off you can't complain.

I have bought a like new Bucktool with sheath for $20.00. 110s from the 60s on up for between $10 and $20.00. A Ruana skinner for $25.00. and just today a 119 in the box with sheath for $20.00

Of course the pawn shops in most places try to sell items for more then they cost new. The money in pawn shops is in the loaning not the selling so they can afford and like to have a lot of inventory.
