I've been wondering if it's legal to snare in my home state of California and, if so, what kind of license you need to do it. So I spent a few hours reading the Fish and Game Code. Anyway, apparently wire snaring and deadfalls are legal for all purposes other than recreation and commerce in fur. So, I guess it's fine so long as no one enjoys it?

Here are some other strange things I've learned:

It is unlawful to pursue any bird in any motorized vehicle.

It is unlawful to shoot at birds from an airplane.

It is unlawful to shoot any bird or mammal through an internet connection originating in the state of California or, having done so, to import any part of the carcass into the state of California.

It is unlawful to possess the carcass of any creature legally trapped outside the state if the method of trapping is illegal within the state.

Those Dick Cheney hunts where you stand next to a truck and they release a bunch of birds for you to shoot? Those are fine. Unless they're pheasant. Than it's a felony.

Possession of roadkill is a misdemeanor.

You must be twelve years old to hunt bear.

Here is one of my favorite. I'm paraphrasing here, this is not the actual text.

Automatic or gravity knives are illegal to possess in NY unless one is hunting or fishing.

I think that what they are saying is that you can't use snares for recreation(as in killing just to kill) or commerce in fur(killing just for the fur), so what it sounds like is you can snare if it is within the season of that animal and you have to eat it or donate the meat or something, you can't just snare animals for the sake of snaring them.

Please don't take my word for it though, contact the CA DFG to make sure what you are wanting to do is legal, if you can't make sense of the hunting law book.

Yes, California's hunting and fishing laws can be pretty strict and complicated, but they have to be or there would be nothing left to hunt or fish for in California, because there are so many danged people here.
