Hunting with a .22

I wouldn't hunt a deer with a .22 LR, except in an emergency survival situation. I have been told by people with experience that shooting them in the eye works well.

The moron from "Into the wild" didn't have any more shooting skills than he did survival skills. he poached a moose, then he let all the meat go to waste.

The .22 is a great little round

Fantastic on small game, and with the correct shot placement (at shorter ranges) it's capable of taking larger game. Only downside is its lack of power doesn't leave much margin for error.

If the need was there, I certainly wouldn't hesitate to have a crack at larger game with an accurate .22

Kind regards
Mick

Personally, I've seen several deer taken with .22 rimfire cartridges. We used to have a pest license for deer ( also called a farm license) where we could shoot them anytime because they competed with our livestock and they plundered our crops. The only sure fire "drop them where they stand" shots I've seen were just below the ear. I have seen a couple killed with chest shots but they were pretty close when shot and didn't drop right away.

Hope this helps
David

Thanx for all the interesting and informational replies. I feel like the top of the neck/base of the skull shot sounds most effective and easiest to hit for me in a survival situation.--KV

CCI Stingers provide an extra margin of power for the double deuce. While not a good choice for any deer, the little pill can do the job if shot placement is in order. Again, the .22 is a superb all-rounder and probably qualifies as the ultimate survival round. Much of this talk hinges on the ability of the shooter. A sober, but keen eyed shooter with a few years of experience could perform miracles with the lowly .22 on any given day of the week. With the high price of ammo that plagues us these days, the .22 is even a better choice.

hi,
I would much rather have the 22 mag it kills way better than it should and the ammo isnt much heavier. If all I had was .22 long rifle I would try for a back of the head shot, maybe a heart /lung shot if I had a semi-auto and could get 3 or 4 shots in that area.
Down here in the south alot of deer are killed with buckshot and sometime only a couple of pellets hit the vitals and still bring the deer down.

Yes a .22 will kill a deer without a problem if shot placement is there. You don't need a headshot, just a lung or heartshot will do the job.

The bigger calibers just give you more of a safety net when it comes to user error.

Just last year my nephew dropped 2 hogs about 45 lbs each with broadside heart/lung shots, both were through and through shots. This was at about 40-45 yds. with regular Rem. solids. I knew the shots would kill, but was actually pleased to see full penetration.

I believe that a .22 is a great survival tool, both for hunting and for jobs needing less noise. ;)

22's work great for grouse, the season opener was today

Here is an interesting blog about a guy kill a polar bear with a .22.

BILLLY WEBER WAS OUT ON THE OCEAN ICE; and a polar bear came around the corner and ran towards Billy at full speed.
Billy turned and ran. he had a .22 rifle with only one bullet left. he took off running, he had no choice but to run.. that bear was gaining on Billly as he ran for his life. Other hunters out on the ice saw this event unfold, but were too far away to offer any assistance. There is only one place to shoot a polar bear to kill it.
that one vital spot is in the ear. While running for his life, with that bear quckly gaining on Billy he merly pointed that rifle back as he ran and took the shot.. .. ..
.. .. Billy lived to tell about this and everyone up here knows of this famous event.

That bear was that close, because Billy waited, and waited until the last possible second to point it at the ear and take the shot while on the run. That bear went down.

The moron from "Into the wild" didn't have any more shooting skills than he did survival skills. he poached a moose, then he let all the meat go to waste.

That was exactly my point. If a moron can do it so can you!

just don't unless you have to for some reason.

I've killed a heck of a lot of livestock with .22s over the years. Put one between the eyes and up to a big black angus steer will drop like a brick. Always surprises me how sudden it happens. Like cutting the strings on a puppet. 180gr of 30-06 soft tip through both lungs and the heart on a small whitetail doe (tasty is more important than size) still had me dragging the damned thing up from a gully 300yds away. Tough little deer, that one. Almost wished I'd picked a different one (till supper that is). Anyway, it's a cliche cause it's true. It ain't the round but where you put it that counts.
