I just wanted to say that I hope everyone here (and eveyone else) stays safe. From what I have seen and heard this is a big (Catagory 5) storm. I don't know if anyone here is in the path of the storm, but I hope everyone stays safe.

Best Wishes and Hopes. Stay safe as possible. I went through Edward and Helena. Hunker down and let us know your okay when possible. For those with loved ones in the path, We send our most positive thoughts and hopes.

Yep,,she's coming

It is supposed to be a biggie, I'm really curious to see what is left of New Orleans afterwards,  ,I really feel for those folks down along the coast that are going to be getting the worst of the storm, If everything goes like they predict, we in Central Alabama will probably be getting some pretty good rain fall and wind from it, hoply it will weaken a good bit before it gets up this far.

How is the weather in the southern states now? How bad is it expected to get?

well,,yesterday was completely beautiful and sunny without a cloud in the sky.

today was sunny and partly cloudy, had a few small showers, but otherwise it has been really nice here,

I spent the day out riding my waverunner with some friends at the lake.

I believe we are supposed to be getting some rain starting either later tonight or tomorrow,,,I'm not sure, Havent heard the weather forecast since earlier this evening.

I have heard some of the states on the Eastern coast, Gulf of Mexico area, and some southern states are expecting quite a bit of damage.

I just got a call from my buddy who is in the Army down in LA. He said it took him 4 hours to travel 5 miles during their evac. He is heading home to IL to get away, but he and his family left everything but their paperwork and six pairs of clothes. They live 5 miles from the ol' Miss and 6 miles from New Orleans, so I imagine he won't have anything left when he gets back in there.

The wife's cousin is in the USMC and he and his group had to evac aircraft to Texas to avoid the mess. His wife and baby drove out to Texas to meet him, but I bet they won't have much to come home to either.

Makes the occasional tornado in the midwest seem kind of insignificant doesn't it?

Progunner, not that it replaces the most personal items, but hopefully they are insured. Being military families, I would think so. It still is very difficult to lose everything, but hopefully they will be safe.

I just saw some photos that indicate southern Ontario (and some of the northern states) might get some action as well.

Most of New Orleans is underwater.Gulfport,Mississippi and Mobile,Alabama look like they will be decimated. This thing is crazy.Pray for all.

I am not questioning what you say when I say this but do you know I could find some pics/movies/ articles on this? I have not heard this much damage was incured.

Peter,
Go to this website : NOLA.com: Hurricane Center (http://www.nola.com)

Everything you want to know about the herricane is there.

BTW....Leatherbird did'nt mean New Orleans was litteraly under water (altho it may be by the time you read this).
The city is below sea level. The have the Gulf to the south, the Mississippi River to the west and a huge lake to the east.
There are levies to keep the water out. The problem now is the strong winds will make the water leval higher than the levies and the water will flood the city.
They have underground pumps that would normaly pump the water into the lake but since in this case the lake will also be overflowing so pumping water back into it will not help.

a level 5 hurricane (having happened only 3 times in recorded history) could completely level new orleans in the worst case senario.... keep in mind that while tornado's are devestating - there will probably be several tornado's within the storm as it passes...

i dont think that people realize how bad 175mph winds are (with faster gusts). take a baseball and get it going 175mph, and it can enter a car door - through the door.

seriously best of luck and hope going out to everyone in the louisiana territory... this is the absolute worst that mother nature can dish out on a large scale.

Do you happen to know how many people in New Orleans have decided not to evacuate? I heard some citizens decided to stay after deciding the media was over emphasizing the dangers.
