Havent heard from anyone else in the state yet myself. But here in the northest corner we got really lucky. The eye broke open and kicked to the esat and basically walked around us with little more than a little wind and a lot of rain.tried to get ahold of some makers I know in Alabama but couldnt get through the lines, they were full and not letting calls in.Know more this afternoon.

The power came back on this afternoon about 2:30, It was off for 16 hours. We have a lot of branches down from the wind, but very little rain. There are a lot of people in the south that really got hammered and lost everything, so I can put up with a power outage. George, I apreciate your call checking to see how we made out. I won't forget it.

Heard from Mother-In-Law in Gulfport.Total devastation. She is alive and unharmed.Tidal surge wiped out everything right up to her house.Highway 90 is destroyed, and everything along it,too.Downtown Gulfport is a ruin.

Those poor people. It's very sad to watch it on TV. Some parts of New Orleans is under 20 feet of water, unbelievable. :(

New Orleans is a bad place too
it's 5ft below sea level to start with if I recall :(

I'm Glad to hear your OK,, you're one of the lucky..

Has anyone heard from Will52100?or Perry Wingo (he lives in Gulf port)

or Terry Vandeventer, what about David Winston??????

Im more worried about Will and Perry,as they lived in the main hit area...Havent been able to get ahold of anyone down that way..This sucks setting here and not really being able to help anyone out.

Now they are saying it will be around a month before they even start getting power down there, plus with as much destruction as they had it is heart breaking. There is not enough rescue workers to help out, between New Orleans needing evacuating and people on the coast of Ms.needing help there just isnt enough people and helicopters to help out.Our local radio stations are having relief drives for food-toiletries-and Medicines, along with the red cross accepting cash, but that will only be a little help.Allot of people still missing down there, and no way to find out if they are alive or not...

I really feel sorry for our soldiers over seas who lived in these areas that cannot help out or find there loved ones,we have allot of our MS. national guard soldiers in Iraq now, prayers to all.

Wish I could do something, but dont know what 1 person could do to help  Wish I could get a whole bunch of people with trucks and tools to convoy down and help out were ever was needed. But wouldnt know how to start getting something like this started.

If anyone does hear from any of our felow makers and they need a place to stay,My house will be open to them,we will figure out a way to accomodate any and all of them.

Oh well enough ranting from me.If anyone hears from any of our fellow makers from down in those areas please let us know as soon as possiable.

Very generous of you Bruce. Good man.

I'm really struck by the extent of the devastation. Posibly thousands dead and tens of thousands homeless. Many were uninsured and lost everything.

Most homes in New Orleans will be a total loss. Once the water recedes the decay and mold will set in, rendering the homes unsuitable to live in and unfit for repair.

I would like to extend my most heartfelt sympathies to the victims and survivors of this disaster, and to their families and loved ones as well.

I've already made a donation to the American Red Cross and designated it for hurricane relief, but I want to do more. If any of the folks in our knifemaking community here have been affected, I will try to contribute to them in some small way as well.

Most of my family lives in Monticello in south MS. I talked to my Dad and brothers after the worst had passed Monday, and everyone is OK there and there was no structural damage to anyone's home. They lost 'phone service sometime early Monday night, and I haven't heard from them since. At my Dad's place, there are lots of trees down, no power, no 'phones, and no city water. My family has a well for water and a generator to run the well pump and freezers, and they have propane to cook with, but many are not as fortunate and are in my prayers. The power company is saying 4 to 6 weeks before power is restored in that area. William Courtney (will52100) lives about 25 miles east of Monticello, and that area was hit harder than at my Dad's since it is closer to where the eye passed. Without landline 'phone service, or any cellular service in the area, it might be a few days before we hear from Will. There have been no serious injuries or deaths reported in this area, so that is a good thing.

Haven't heard from Perry yet.I'm concerned about him, too.
IG- New Orleans is 22 feet below sea level.

I am hoping that Pery and Will are doing ok.

Got ahold of Terry Vandeventer last night,he just got power back on,has a tree in the house but other than that he was fine.

The gas situation here is going to start getting dramatic before it is done.

I even went and bought coal today and am getting the dust off the old coal forge as Propane is getting high also.

All we can do is pray for all those in the south and be thankful that we didnt get hit any worse than we did.

We're doing fine. I appreciate you asking Bruce. We had anticipated big problems, but Katrina moved East and Shreveport was not affected. I'm in the Northwest corner of Louisiana.

Glad to hear that you are doing fine Terry. Now just to wait it out and see if we hear from Will and Perry.

Man this has gotten bad down there.Hope they can start getting supplies to the people soon.

Bruce

Just talked to Billy Foster in Vicksburg, he is without power and has been since Monday at 11:00a.m. He did get a generator last night. Other than that he is ok. We took him some drinking water and ice as they are on a boil water alert. He said he has been trying to get Perry Wingo on his cell but has had no luck. I am calling Mr. Billy everyday so if he hears anything I will let everyone know.

I finally found out tonight that all my relatives who lived in New Orleans and the surrounding area did in fact get out before Katrina hit.

They have no idea if there's anything left to go back to, but at least they are alive, and we're breathing a sigh of relief. I will not be burying any kin folks -- at least not related to Katrina.

As wonderful as that news is, my heart is still breaking for the poor souls left behind.
