Hurricane Sandy landfall

There was a notice on my door for a mandatory evacuation but is am staying put. Stupid? I hope not. I would feel better if my wife and kids would go to my moms and let me worry about the house but she's too stubborn. Just going to cross my fingers and hope we don't get flooded out. The power loss is nothing new but the tidal surge has me nervous.

If you're in a low area, or might not have enough supplies, or have medical needs... You should consider going on vacation for a couple of days.

We get coots on a lake about a mile from here. The lake rises as much as 6' when the storms get bad. The coots don't care ...

I hear you guys. Hopefully I'll have some time in the morning to reevaluate the situation. My instinct is to protect the house and if I could just get the family out I would feel better about doing it but I am not a complete idiot. :)

Btw our schools are closed until Thursday!

Everybody needs to relax. Nothing you can do about the weather but make sure you are prepared where you live. There is alot of generalization about what is going to happen. It will effect areas in it's path differently. The weather media and news media piss me off with these types of events. Just like all the news, it's blown way out of proportion at times. I've watched people panic in different storms predictions for over 30 years working in the grocery business. It's laughable.

I agree lets just do what we know, prepare for the worst, hope for the best. If this turns out to be a fly fart in the wind than so be it, if you are In a area that's stomped than you will be glad you were prepared. I'm am not saying loose your mind, just be attentive to your particular situation .

Old coots don't care either. :D

I just saw Geraldo on TV. It must be getting pretty bad. His hair is messed up.

What EDC do you carry during a hurricane?

I'm doing my part to prepare by eating all of the ice cream in the freezer in case we lose power, even though I have standby/whole house genset and have never been without power more than 15 seconds:D Actually I've spent the last three days driving around the state making sure all my family members' generators are serviced and ready to go. That'll guarantee that we don't lose power here.

Flooding has begun in some areas.

Staten Island already flooding 18-24 hours before the main event. This is Arthur Kill Rd and Richmond Rd which is not near the Ocean. But is in near a creek which leads to the waterway that separates NJ from Staten Island.

Stay safe friends.

Sounds like it's gonna get interesting, I am slated to drive down to Bridgeton NJ tomorrow, staying in Vineland til Friday, might make it there, might not make it out? I'd change plans but right now need to still be there this week for work, we'll see how far I get tomorrow, I drive down past Harrisburg PA then cut over past Lancaster and down towards the Delaware Memorial Bridge to cross over into NJ and then straight in to Bridgeton, some pretty low land around Salem NJ there, hope it's not flooded out by the time I get there!

You might contact the State Police and get a sitrep for your route. And update it from time to time.

Well, I'll be reserving judgement until I see what happens. These weather folks tend to be like the media and exaggerate their tales. I've got flashlight batteries, dry goods, and camp stove, and lots of ammo and a full jug of whiskey. I think most are over reacting.

When they predict plague and locusts I'll start to worry!

Same here, I've lived for 3 years on 2 seperate occasions with no electric, no runnin' water, no heat, no indoor plumbin' so as much as I appreciate cable, electric, the internet, if the power goes out, we'll get by fine.

Last year durin' the snowstorm on Halloween, power went out and didn't come back on for 7 days, I'll reserve my opinion till later and let the professional panickers stress out.

On the otherhand havin' a creek in my backyard and livin' a mile from the Delaware River floodin' is a whole 'nother matter...

Good idea, I've started making a Bug-Out-Bag to bring along with me in case the car gets stranded for what ever reason, or the hotel gets done in, either way, it's probably past due time to have one, with all the travel that I do. Have to start searching some threads for recommended things to have in that BoB with me, so far I have;

Swiss Army knife
Small folder
Boker Vox BoB (seems appropriate ;) )
Socks/undies never can tell, dry socks are always a good thing
Matches in waterproof container - I need to get a fire starter, had one a while back and gave to a hunting friend
Whistle with compass and magnifier lens
Couple bottles of water
Emergency blanket thingy, really slim but gave it a shot
Hand sanitizer
Oops forgot also have a Fenix TK15 light as well as spare batteries

that's it for now, will keep filling it up as I go along...

Toss in some bags of food. Mountain House takes just hot water and is way better than MREs. And a few snacks. Coghlan's fire starter blocks are great and easy to light with a bic. You won't need and tender then. A paper map is handy too, even if it is a dupe of one you already keep in the car. Flashlight and/or lightstick.

As I said, stay safe.

Our water system is gravity feed, so no worries. And I could live a while without power. Phone service and television, wouldn't even miss it. I'd learn to get by without Bladeforums and the internet. But...

I'd take my chances out on the Road Warrior Highway before being stuck in a flooded house with no escape. Sewage, mud, vermin and snakes.

Something to think about?

Thanks, good tip on the Mountain House, will also get some trail mix in there as well. I'll check out the Coghlan blocks too. Also bought what appears to be a decent back pack at wally world, a Fieldline Tactical pack, lots of storage without being too large, also a hat, ;) my wife thinks that pretty goofy but if it's raining, and a good bet it will be there! A hat kinda like Indy Jones will help keep the water off my head and out of my back...
