Hydration packs, why?

Personally, I love hydration bladders. I've only had one fail on me, a Platypus, and that was after a few years of pretty rough use. Fortunately it wasn't in my pack at the time. I have a Camelbak now, and it is amazingly tough.

Here, Backpacker magazine runs one over with a truck with nary a problem.

Also, I find just drying them out after use is enough to keep mold away, you can remove the bite valve in order to air the hose out. I've also heard of people storing them empty in the freezer to prevent mold.

a hydro pack if filled with cold water can keep your back cool during hot days, it also feels good on your back because there is nothing poking you in the back

We don't have endless water here in the west. Plus, at altitude, you need to drink more. Hydration packs are great, especially for trips where 2-3L of water will do the trick. and if you think the weight is too much, what are you bringing into the woods that takes the place of 2 lbs water?

Many packs nowadays are COMPATIBLE with hydration reservoir. You don't have to put one in it. Think of it like an OPTIONAL feature. It is like a pocket you can use if you need or want. However you don't HAVE use the hydration reservoir, if you don't need it. Personally I like options. I know an individual who didn't like the extra 1oz of weight the sleeve added, and cut it out :jerkit:.Easier than sewing one in. Options...
