I'm rebuilding my shop. I've been out of the loop for a while and need recommendations on the best hydraulic press. I'm not interested in building one. I'd get another BigBlu, but I'm fairly certain I'll get booted for noise violations.

Thanks gents.

Matt

Yo, Counselor, how have you been?:D The people who have one say that the press that Matt Whitmus makes is the shizzle as is his rolling mill. Pricey, though. Bowie's press would be in second place in my book because you can also buy all of the dies from him. So, are you planing to drag your sorry lawyer azz to Atlanta this June? :D

+1 on the Whittmuss Press. I am fullcapable of building another should I have cause. But ifit came to it I would buy a Whittmuss press.

Joe, I'm still alive and kicking. Constantly working, but at least I can see some light at the end of the tunnel. I doubt I'll be making Blade. However, if I can get my ass in gear I'd like to hit San Antonio next year, maybe with five knives in hand :).

Burton, I used Greg's press many times. It's a really nice machine. I didn't know if Ron was still making them. If I can find info on Whitmus I'll check it out.

I talked with him about a year ago and he said he still was at that time. I haven't spoken to him since.

As long as you have long hydraulic lines and mount the power pack- motor, pump and relief valves remotely, outside, in it's own shed, in a little insulated closet - whatever the press itself is very quiet.

Matt, the Whitmus stuff is not cheap, but the one thing that I recall is that it has a remote hydraulic "power pack" so you may only need one to operate both machines. From what little I have seen, the press is a monster, but the rolling mill may be more impressive, especially with the optional features that operate off of the ends of the rollers. I hear tell of being able to twist a 1.5 inch square Damascus bar 8 or 9 full revolutions no one heat and squaring "die" small rollers.

Joe, I'm more interested in the press. I want to forge blades and damascus. If I have room I could add the mill at some point, however, I don't see the utility (at least for what I make). I miss the BigBlu but the noise is really a problem, although a knife or two a month shouldn't be too much of a concern for the neighbors.

Thanks for the contact info. I'll call this afternoon and report here.

Matt's press is trully a great piece of machinery. It is availible with an electric over hydaulic control so that a thickness can be set and the press will go down to that thickness and not go any farther. it also has a dual ram design so no problems with making parallelograms. there are several other functions that are very nice to have. I have used on on several occasions and like I said before If I needed a press this is the one I would buy.
