Hydraulics Question

A while back I put together a big breaker hammer in a quarry.All the work I did was pretty basic,put on the hoses,brackets and controls.

My question is what makes something like that tick? Literally ! Is there a solenoid that regulates beats per min/sec and could that same solenoid be used on a forging press to make it a press/hammer

In the link above, a fellow forumite has a photo and brief description of what you are talking about.
It is a very sweet setup. It would allow the maximum amount of strokes per heat.

there are others i have read about too,
maybe ed caffery or wayne goddard ???
