hey everybody,

i would like to get into making damascus, but the stuff i had made by hand is just too darn time consuming to be worth it. so i was thinking i could get one of those 5-10 ton hydrolic presses and modify it a but ti make it work for hot work..
can i do this? if so.. what do i need to do? and if not, what can i do to get the same sort of thing.. a "cheap" way to make damascus
thanks!

Chris Look for old trip hammers in the auction sale bills or you can buy a used log splitter and change the dies out to use it for welding. I got both my trip hammers a 25lb and a 50lb by looking at auctions paid less than 500 apiece for them.

where on Don Fogg's forum is the pneumatic press? i am on the forum... but nt sure where to look. also, where can i find a place that auctions off said trip hammers? (and what kind of foot print do they have? i have limited space
thanks so much

Chris did you look at that $100 pneumatic press "thunder" made on Fogg's forum?

I just got back from the scrap yard buying materials for this press and it looks like it really will only cost about $100, even buying all the matieral got 12' of 2x2 3/16 wall square tubing about 4 feet of 1x2 bar stock and 4' X 8" X 1/4" plate which is more than enough material to make the press for $40 throw in the jack from harbor freight with a 15% discount coupon $64 and total cash outlay looks to be about $104 now all I need to do is get it put together.

frog keep us up to date on this build i am limited to space and this just looks like a killer idea. only thing im not sure of is the dies do u make those also and out of what kinda of steel?

According to the builders site mini hydraulic press he used mild steel and I'm planning on using the 1x2 bar stock. I've also got some 1 1/2 round 5160 that I may use to make some drawing dies the challenge right now is figuring out how I want to fix the dies to to the press.

DANG!!!!!!
i want one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it makes hand hammering look stupid. i def. want one..
let me know how the building goes.. i have a wleder and everything.. i want one.
thanks so much for sharing

idea of fixing the dies in place. Take thick piece of angle iron and weld it to bottom anvil of this press. make it so i has 1/4 lip /edge on it. now on the dies make a flange that overhangs the base of the die and then i think u could slide the dies in and out from the front but the wont be able to be drawn off the anvil base? make any sense?.

hmmmmmmm
what do you make the dies out of? and i think i get what you are saying with the angle iron, but could you draw a picture? (visual person) also. i have a little 125 flux core mig welder, will that be powerful enough to do teh welding required?
thanks
~Chris

It doesn't seem to be a problem making the dies out of mild steel and I've just started welding up my base with my little mig welder but I'm thinking I'll break out the stick welder for anything critical.
