hypothetical knife ?

BUCK knives sends out a news letter monthly.

in this past one there was a story about a 69 year old man who got attacked by a grizzly and caughtn't get to his rifle. so he put up his arm when the bear came down on him and bit right to his forearm bones then he reached for hi buck 110 folder and plunge it in to neck or nose I can't remember. the bear stood back then collapsed. he crawled to his rifle and let some rounds out in to the bear and crawled out to his car.

I was impressed to say the least. but I have a bigger knife than a 110 probably any large chopper and I would try ( if I could think at all) to hit a shoulder joint or neck. do some biomechanical cutting. try to stop him from moving instead of going in.

Men are born soft and supple;Dead they are stiff and hard.

Whoever is stiff and infexible is a disciple of death. Who ever is soft and yielding is a disciple of life.

The hard and stiff will be broken . The soft and supple will prevail.

Chrisaloia,

The details on that story are reported in the December issue of Knives Illustrated. It seems to have been more of an all out braw than a simple exchange (and that 69 year old is one big tough bastid)

I have spent a little time around Bears, both working in Yellowstone/Teton Parks and Central Idaho. I think a 3" folder and a little common sense would go a lot further than a 20" blade and a Black belt!

It seems like most people who live through these type of incidents do so with a small, cheap folder, but given the choice... I'd pick something long, strong, and double edged with a good handle that is easy to hold unto when it is bloody. My Cold Steel Black Bear Classic jumps to mind, but I'm not sure I'd be confident it wouldn't break. My Mission MPT-Ti is lightweight and plenty strong, but I'd want two edges. Probably the same type of knife they use to kill wild boars would be ideal. Of course, that ideal knife for tackling bears probably wouldn't be the ideal camp knife or fun to pack across the mountains...

I vote for a Spyderco Jester.

While the Bear is rolling on the ground, loughing his ass off, i'll just leave the place...

A good razor sharp, double edged spear point securely lashed to a stout, 6'X 2" hardwood staff, with another stabbing and slicing weapon on my belt.

I second the lightsabre idea, just make it dual bladed.

Seriously though, I wonder if a well made katana would have enough cutting power to handle one of 'em. If it didn't, at least it'd make a decent sized toothpick
