Hypothetical Situation

I can understand that point of view but when we're buying and selling, essentially it's like a little business.
If I was running my own business, and took 5 or more days to ship after payment, then I might have issues with my customers. And really, that's not great customer service.
I think people assume the seller will ship soon because that's what the majority of businesses will do.

Business?!!

I think of it more like a bunch of friends trading knives. Never looked at this as a "business". :(

I think of a business as a cold lifeless institute. I know these peoples wives/families, joys and sorrows. I would never treat any of them like a customer, more as a brother or friend. Just like when I call the shop, Amy/Jerry/Garth/Ron.....any and everyone there ask how my daughter is and the wife.

You sound like one of dem HOGS! :p:thumbup::thumbup:

Breathe.

I'm not going to send someone $500 until I've checked them out. That means that either (a) the seller is a regular (most likely a paying member) that I recognize here at BFC and/or (b) the seller has a history of good feedback on GB&U or another forum. I have, in the past, even PM'd people who've dealt with a seller before and asked about communication, shipping, etc. Face it. Busses are expensive, and if you're going to buy and sell them with regularity, it helps immensely to know the people with whom you're dealing.

It helps if the seller produces a picture of the actual knife and sets clear terms. It also helps if the seller lives close by and I know I can show up at his/her house if need be.

This is good advice. I get "blinded by the INFI", and sometimes forget the importance of knowing the seller.
Another thing, for me, the expectation of reasonably fast shipping is not so that I can have the knife faster, it is so that I will have no "unfinished business" looming. So whether it's Busse knives, or carrot sticks, i like to finalize the purchase as soon as possible.

Sit back and relax, there are A LOT more things to upset about than shipping time. No offense to anyone, but it seems to be the new folks who get their panties in a bunch when the knife doesn't magically appear 3 hours later or a up to the minute of why I am not mailing mailing the knife right away.

The Hogs seem to have a more relaxed attitude. I would have been upset if I told them I need the knife by a certain day and it wasn't there without a reason. Life is what happens when we are NOT at our computers and it has all sorts of twist and turns.

Relax, when it gets there it WILL be worth the wait!

Yeah, what He said. I've recently waited 2 weeks and not got bent out of shape, because I knew I'd get my blades from the fellow HOG.

No Regrets!!!!

Never a HOG till you shake the Boss's hoof!!

Looks like the key to my happiness in buying knives is knowing the seller, or at least the seller's reputation. As long as I know I'm not being swindled, I can live with a wait. Not knowing about the wait is OK if I am sure of the seller. I guess it is an unknown wait with an unknown seller that causes me grief. And I can remedy that!
Thanks for all of the input. It has been helpful.

Really shouldn't matter that much . I 've never had a problem with any of the members on BF , on shipping or payment issues .I've had to shift a few dollars a couple of times with paypal , sellers were very understanding .Most seller will post shipping on threads or via e-mail ect. I hope all goes well with sale .

Jason, does this mean that you're finally going to give me the "friends and family" discount on that certain knife? :p :D

Things are getting strange in this thread... :barf:

:p

Great advice above: Check the seller's history here. I always use the "advanced" serch here and look for the seller in TGTBTU. If I do not get any hits I'll ask for references. You just never know. But so far I have lucked out and dealt with great guys and gals.

You'll feel more comfortable once you've been here a while and made a few deals. Great people in this room.

For the time being untill you get comfortable about buying from someone you don't know about just shoot me a PM if you wish. I may know of them or will ask someone that does Know them.

Excellent idea. I have been on both ends of this. In a community this small someone is bound to know something. ;)

This got a little too deep in the "brotherhood" aspect as opposed to the real question posed. Unless I missed it, he did not say where he bought or who he bought from. He asked if you would be irritated by someone who did not disclose a 4 day delay on the shipping of your knife until "after" the money was exchanged. I would not be so happy about it. HOG title or no HOG title. Buying from one of the regular posters here would ease my mind a bit about getting ripped off but I would not be happy with them unless they told me about the shipping delay before I sent the money. I think shipping within a 2 "week days" time frame max is a reasonable expectation for a cash deal. Things happen and we all understand that but this sounded to me like the seller knew they were working these long hours, would not be able to ship in a timely fashion, and just didn't say anything about when it would be shipped until they were pressed. Bad way to conduct a BUSINESS transaction and that is exactly what exchanging valuable merchandise of any kind for cash is. I check the GBU before a transaction but have done business with people who did not have any feedback as well. I did not have any when I first started buying and trading here. References are another way I suppose but I tend to be a bit impatient as well and would be worried that someone else would take the deal while I was asking for references.
Its always a bit of a gamble but I will say again that dealing with one of the regulars here eases my mind. I don't blame you for being irritated. Keep your composure and wait. I probably would not do any future business with them and most certainly would not list them in a positive manner in GBU. I reserve that for smooth easy transactions that others would benefit from. I would not post anything there about it as long as I got the goods. Good luck

I'm just trying to help a newer member feel at ease D.

I always ship in one day but have bought from a few that have had to wait a few days to ship. I have no trouble with it since I and most have plenty of knives to use.

You say you feel like it's always a bit of a Gamble. I don't want the poster to feel this way because it's not a gamble. Have you ever been took here?

I've never bought a lottery ticket and won't gamble unless I'm about 95% sure I'll win. I've bought over 25 Busse's on the exchange and never worried one bit.

I kinda feel what your saying as I'm darn near OCD, but this is one place I don't have to worry about.

Please don't take any offence:) Just trying to give the poster a little comfort.
I think that's what he needed.

I think shipping within a 2 "week days" time frame max is a reasonable expectation for a cash deal.

My response had nothing to do with HOGs or "brotherhood" other than the fact that I do tend to trust established HOGs with my money more quickly than others. As far as wait time goes, however, I'd be just as inclined to give a reputable seller the benefit of doubt as I would a HOG.

I think 4-5 days is quite reasonable on shipping. If I ordered something right now from a host of my usual online vendors, I could expect shipping within 2 days from maybe a handful. In my experience, businesses can often take a week or more to ship. That's why most standard shipping details promise delivery in 8 to 10 business days, or sometimes 10 to 12 business days. An item has to be located in a warehouse, item has to be packaged, item has to be processed in a database of some sort... you get the picture.

In my own case, I've had instances (with Beckers and those big green boxes in particular) where I couldn't find a decent shipping box for a day or three. I've had instances where I was simply too busy to get to the PO for a few days. In such cases, I do update buyers as to any delay. Seems like this seller did email and said it would be Saturday before the knife could ship. The fact is, however, when you list a knife on the Exchange, you don't know EXACTLY WHEN it's going to sell. So it's a little hard to predict just how busy you'll be or how quickly you'll be able to get to a post office when it does.

I won't make any further suppositions about the deal in question because I don't know the details. I do know a lot of GB&U threads could be avoided if people stop making assumptions and nail down details in advance. The OP here even mentions that he assumed shipping would occur more quickly.

My take here? The world has just gotten in too dang big of a hurry. Do your homework in advance. Then slow down and take a deep breath. Unless you have a pre-established deadline, a few days is not much in the big scheme of things, and it's surely not worth the stress. Once it's been a couple of weeks and you haven't seen your knife and the seller isn't returning emails at all, then you can worry. :p

I agree... the auto mail centers won't let you insure >$500; you've got to have a live teller for that. Can I make it over at lunch (where the lunchtime line may be > 1 hour long?) Maybe. Depending on what is going on at work. Some days I can't take a lunch. Some days I may get pulled away from the office to another location. The post office might be closed before I get to leave.

My work day just isn't that ordered.

I've sold a few things but bought a lot more from other BFCers. I don't even notice how long before they shipped until it goes longer than one week for them to say "it shipped." ie., until they've had a weekend to get it done.
