Ok, I am kinda torn between a Hinderer and a Strider. I realize Mick doesn’t have the best reputation among us knife aficionados but his products seem to get decent reviews. I absolutely love his designs so I did some rather extended research on his knives and now, I would love to have one. I am a little nervous though, because I would have to order it online because nobody in my area carries them including the big knife store in Sevierville. You know, the one with the blue roof.
The Hinderer is a little easier to get ahold of, because a local shop has one in stock plus the knife store I mentioned earlier carries them. As far as Hinderers go, I like the Jurassic and XM-18 models. I like the Strider designs better, but is the quality up to par with the Hinderers? Which would you go with?
I won’t have the funding for both, so 400+ dollars will have to do for a while at least.

I would take the Hinderer over the Strider any day. It has had better quality control over its lifespan imho. Strider can make good knives but at the current time it is almost impossible to get a new production Strider folder.

That means you will have have to either buy a used Strider or a Mick Strider Custom. Buying a used Strider will open you up to the possibility of getting one of the ones that have quality control or design issues such as one with the very radiused lockface which all developed lockrock.

If there was some way to be sure you were getting a Strider without any flaws in design it would be a closer contest in my opinion but I believe the safer bet is to get the Hinderer.

They are both great knives but I just feel like the Hinderer is the safer bet.

Hinderer, here’s why. Currently, Striders are over priced on the secondary market. There are the Striders on the market that were made before the name “Strider” was dissolved. The knives are now under the name M. Strider. Currently, they are run in smaller batches and sell out quickly and the only other place is the secondary market.
The Hinderer’s have actually come down in price and the secondary market prices are very reasonable. You can replace the Teflon washers with phosphorus bronze, there’s a ton of accessories to dress it up with.
I am looking to get a Strider, but not at the going prices that are being asked. I don’t want one that bad.

Sort of. Strider is still making production knives after the restructuring (or whatever). I have bought 3 since the change - 1 from Money Edge, 2 from PDW. They are still stamped Strider or M. Strider, I forget, not signed like MSC stuff. The production runs may be less frequent, but they are being made.

Super biased opinion but Hinderer XM-18 by far my favorite knife design in existence. Very well made fitted and finished even tho it is pretty simple to make but still excellently made.
Love the customization and how well the hardware is made. Even the screws and nuts have zero play.

Ergonomic masterpiece imo and a small thing but the pocket clip is my favorite amongst any knife the ramp and depth of carry are perfect for me

Prices if you don’t mind a near new one are great. I’ve gotten two off the exchange one pretty much new and another in used but great condition and not paid over $300.
So if you get a good deal there’s room to dress it up with a Ti scale and what not and not feel guilty about it

None of them actually. If I was spending that much money on a knife it would go elsewhere.

I have had multiples from both companies over many years. I sold my last Hinderers and I have a couple old Striders in drawers that don't get carried much anymore.
If you absolutely have to have one, I'd say go with the company you're pretty sure will be available to service it down the road. If you are buying them on credit, I say
buy neither. It is very unwise to pay 15 - 30% interest for years to come on some toy you might like for 6 months or a year.

I've gone all the way across the spectrum from low end to very high end knives most all were sold at a loss over many years. The
knife I won't leave home with these days is a good Spyderco. Fairly priced and does what I need knives to do. Also my credit cards are mostly recovered.
It is an addiction, think long and hard before you dive too deep. Best of luck.

Yeah they are being made, but as I said they are harder to get because the production runs are alot less frequent.

Neither. Go custom for that money.

People say that. However...

I went with other offerings and customs that were better "value" than the overpriced Strider.
But I still liked the design, so eventually I got a Strider.

Then later, I got the Hinderer once they were available for purchase at the actual price (screw the secondary market prices!!!).

If you want a particular knife, a different one won't do, no matter if it is a better value or not.

Strider for sure. They are built to work and will take just about anything you throw at them. Try to find one with a ffg for best performance.

Lately it seems like recent examples have been great quality, and I imagine only better now that they are sold directly, through the Mick Strider Customs website. These knives generally seem to get better with use and work great, even when dirty.

Spartan Blades Harsey

Between the two: Hinderer (I'd wait for the Full Track Release, or a XM-24 Bowie)
Overall, I'd probably go with something else, the Full Track could be nice, but it'll be a while until they are out and there are a couple cheaper knives that I'd rather get for the money.

Completely biased opinion based on what I like
1st I don't like flippers so if I am buying a Hinderer it will be a non-flipper
I prefer the Strider SnG to the 3.5" Hinderer XM-18. I like the SnG design better and it is a much lighter EDC. 3.5" XM-18 is too heavy for my EDCing.
I prefer the 3" Hinderer XM-18 to the Strider PT
If this was my 1st and possibly only higher knife purchase I would buy the CRK Sebenza-great EDC and quality
I own an SnG, custom 3" XM-18, custom Hinderer Firetac and a few Sebenza's(small & large) and like them all, but if I had to choose it would be the Sebenza-good quality, customer service, utility and easy to maintain-all around good knife.

It is very addicting and the options are nearly limitless. I agree that it would be crazy make an impulse purchase just to end up losing a truck load of money later down the road. Impatient people and credit cards are a bad combination.

I've owned 6 Striders over the years, and at least 12 Hinderers. I've had ones of both that I've really enjoyed, but I'd say Hinderer by far is the better bet. It's just a better made knife, and it has a solid, thriving, well-trained staff standing behind it, with tons of options to customize your knife and make it your own, as he likes to say.

The SnG design is compelling to me still, but not enough to outweigh how seriously worthless of a person Mick is, and his little cabal of followers. I just would rather have stuff made by other people.
