I’ve Got a Remington Stockman that STINKS…Really Bad. Anyone Ever Have a Problem Like This?

If not baking soda crumpled up newspaper pages and put them all in a box and stick the knife in the newspapers the newspapers remove the smell of mold maybe it will help in this case

I have noticed that funky musty smell when I pull out a knife that hasn't seen the light of day for a few years. Even old copper alloy coins get it sometimes. A rubdown takes most of the smell away and it's pretty much gone after being carried for a few days.

Likely to be the smell of verdigris you are picking up then, some people are more aware of the smell than others.

I would like to see the knife and just what handles are we talking about. There are Remingtons and there are Camillus "Remingtons." And many formulas for handles over the years. By the way, someone said steel doesn't smell. 1095 has a very pronounced smell that I can detect for up to at least a foot away (maybe farther) when rubbed on a humid warm day. I did not go check but I am guessing that my German Bokers in 1075 are the same way. A trained dog could probably smell it ten feet away or more.

Very interesting about those tool handles, did they stink up right from the start or does it come with age?

Talking of which....I wonder if I could cover one of my neighbours with Baking Soda? :poop: :D:cool: Finding a big enough ziplock bag might be challenging though..;)
It can depend.

some can develop it over time and some have it right away.
I had some WF Craftsman drivers bought new a couple years ago that had a soapy chemical kind of smell.
I bought some Pratt-Read made Channellock screwdrivers a few months back and some had no smell while others smelled like a dumpster behind a burger joint.

S-K , Stanley 100 plus, MAC, and the old yellow handle PROTO's, zero smell at all and some are 40+ years old. They all used a higher quality composition of Acetate so to speak, I don't know all the details but I know not all acetate handles do it. Some brands are famous for the smell.

Honestly I'm not sure why I'm even hung up on this though, we don't even know if that's the issue or any details about the knife.
I'll go ahead and stop bringing this thread off track with screwdriver discussion now I guess.

Hey all.

I’ll post some pics. I’ll try and show it as best as I can.

It’s definitely a chemical type smell and not something natural.
When I first noticed it prior to all the soaking with gun cleaner spray, it smelled worse and stronger than it does now.
I kinda think it’s the scales, but that’s just a guess. Kinda hard to pin down cause that smell could be coming from anywhere.
I know the stink smell of handling brass objects. This is not that. This is worse.
Pics coming.

Thanks all
