Here we go again! I grew up carrying traditional slip joint knives, before getting hooked on modern designs. I aquired a collection of nearly 50 modern knives. Then I started to really appreciate the old timey traditionals again and traded off the majority of my collection for some slip joints. After growing that collection to about 3 dozen, off they went for a new supply of moderns. I usually carry one of each type. Now, guess what? Yep, I've got the itch to trade back into some more traditionals. Am I alone in my indecisiveness? Why am I never content? I appreciate both styles and always see something else that I like more, for awhile at least. Will I ever achieve the "perfect" balance? Is there such a thing? Not for me, I guess! How about you?

Nah . . . I like both. I lean more toward slip joints and thin blade moderns (more along the lines of a small Japanese kitchen knife that folds. Part of the reason I like the Hold Out so much it is sorta there; no thick back).

THE CHEF is always trying to get me to sell off or . . . gasp . . . give away some of my cool stuff. My crotchety answer to that fanciful pipe dream is "I wouldn't have bought the damned thing if I didn't want it to start with . . . why would I get rid of it now ?"

but hey . . . that's just me.

I like to have one traditional or two in the collection, just to have. I much prefer modern designs.

tradionals will always be king.... Moderns are super nice as well.... Over and Out:thumbup:

Have you gotten into custom knives yet? Try custom of BOTH traditionals & modern knives; THAT takes it to a whole NEW level!!

I lean heavily towards modern designs, but I think the two complement each other nicely. These days I almost always have a larger modern folder clipped in my right front pocket and a smaller slipjoint loose in my left front. This is my excuse to buy both. ;)

I really only like a few traditional patterns:
Congress, Trapper, (Dr's), and Lady Legs which are also functional bottle openers

I also like a SAK huntsman (or evogrip/Wenger etc. Equivalent) and classics.

But I know once I start settling down in my modern styles, I'll be stockpiling a ton of them in different materials and colors.

But I ain't selling nothing! Gaws maybe, but philosophy is, if I can't afford a new knife, I dont get a new knife. I don't sell my old knives just get to get new knives. And if I run out of storage and/or decide certain knives aren't getting the love and attention they need, I'll give them to someone who'll appreciate them rather then sell them.

For day to day stuff, I lean towards modern blades but, I still have a love for a good traditional folder. Takes me back to my boyhood and much simpler times.

I've been stuck on traditional knives for almost 8 years. I still like modern knives and I still have a few but they rarely get carried anymore. I don't have the back and forth issues that you have but I do have the indecisiveness. I don't know how many times I could have sworn that I wouldn't buy any more knives. I have more than I'll ever use but I always seem to find something more appealing. Something I just have to have.

I'll be content for a few months and along comes something else that I can't get out of my mind until I buy it. Then the cycle starts all over again. I've considered not logging onto the forum anymore but I don't want to do that. I like it here too much and if it tempts me to buy more knives then so be it. I just wish I had the self discipline to resist the temptation, but I don't.

I've actually been doing pretty good really. I've only bought 2 knives since September which is much better than my previous track record. But then Income Tax season is here so lookout knife dealers!

It sure is easy to get caught up in the "gotta have the newest flavor of the week traditional" life. I've bought some designs I never carried. I still carry a traditional knife here and there as well as modern knives. It's what makes us go around I guess.

Yep, what he said. Usually a flipper of some sort in front right and smaller slipjoint in left or watch pocket. Works for me.

Kinda same but with hobbies I go between dreaming about buying $130 knives and instead goin for $70 to wanting expensive parts for my Rc racing car and back again sorta a seasonal thing but not

I used to be something of a hoplophile, but my hobby has really narrowed down to knives before going into hyperspace. Just sold a katana so that I could buy another knife. Goodness, me.

I think the evolution of our different knife perceptions is interesting. It helps the hobby/obsession stay fresh[emoji2]

When I first carried knives I thought of them strictly as weapons. I knew nothing of steel and sharpening. Thought traditional were dumb.

Now I look at knives as tools and would prefer something else to use as a weapon if in a bad situation. I want to get more traditional designs as I have almost only modern folders with a few exceptions. I'd also like some ethnic and historically significant knives.

I've never sold a knife. Given plenty away as gifts, but I could never sell a knife I had and loved and used.

Anyways, most of us here have an odd fixation on knives relative to society as a whole. It is always interesting to hear someone else describing their experience.

Sounds like you just need more storage space. Then never sell anything. :D

Yes, this. I mostly have modern folders. The most old-school I have is SAKs and a 110 (that I love dearly). I fully expect one day I'll get bitten by the Traditional bug, it just hasn't happened yet.

I don't jump back and forth from traditional and modern, but I do constantly buy, sell, and trade looking for the perfect knife. So far I haven't found it yet. There is always one aspect just a bit off. I have even bought and sold the same knife over and over again. I am contemplating another Griptilian as we speak after have gone through two or three of them. My wife says I should just make my own. One day ...
