I've had my own experiences like that. The Dollar Store has got an entire shelf stocked with all manner of toy guns in all configurations, including hunting sets that include hunting knives. When I see them I feel like we're returning to a degree of humanity that some of us grew up in.

I agree with the sentiments expressed here.

But ya know, you can support the decision making process of those who included the knives by buying those toys, even if you don't have any boys/kids. I doubt that those toys were very expensive, and you could always just give them away to some kid and really make his day.

For the last 5 years in a row, our family buys toys for the Salvation Army toy drives, and Toys for Tots. For the smaller boys, I throw in some Hot Wheels, a plush toy, and a Nerf type toy gun.

Somewhat related, I think if I have a kid I might buy him/her a couple of those cold steel trainer knives as toys. They're pretty cheap and look like the real thing.

I have a gundam (mech figurine) and it came with a hunter. What does a 200 foot tall mech need a knife for???

They make some Nerf guns that are way cooler now than when I played with Nerf guns.

In addition, they seem to make much worse Legos now. :/ Seems like it's more about buying premade sets that kids just put 3 or 4 big pieces together and it is done.. I'm sure the tried and true Legos are still sold but these sets make me sad.

My buddies son started kindergarten... too early for knife gift?

Legos aren't what they used to be, I remember when you had to 'build' your own theme. I think it helped with creativity. Today, they just want obedient workers.

When I played with em you had to build your own stuff, yeah. I mean sometimes if I got a big box it had some instructions on how best to build random things, but even they required some skill to read/use. And mostly my siblings and I just dumped em out and built our own stuff. You could mix and match the little yellow guys to make all sorts of professions or combinations, and when you just build your own buildings, it really lets the creativity flow. I was never great at it, but it was still fun. Most of the commercials I see are for big pieces that fit together and is more about an "impressive" end product than building anything.

Yeah I bought some as gifts and was saddened to see entire pieced already built and painted. It has only 1 function and defeats the purpose of legos!

Is it weird that I've thought about sharpening the little knife the mech robot came with? It's plastic so it's more of a 'whittle' but it's edge is as dull as it's spine haha

Fair warning: if your action figures come to life at night you will have given the Gundam a weapon to use against you, assuming they do a takeover... just saying.

Agree with the lego and Nerf stuff. I loved the old Nerf Boomerang (3 individual wings with a plastic weight in the center), and the footballs. My nephew got the sword set years ago, and as a result developed an interest in knives and fencing. Pretty cool outcome, out of the blue but nice. He has a few old Spanish Rapier swords that he started collecting, they are impressive and while not knives, they will make lots of holes in a person in no time in the hands of a skilled person.

Today while at the toy store we were walking up and down the isles and I spotted something that temporarily restored my faith in humanity. That faith was short lived , and shattered when I saw a black woman whack her kid in his head and say "come on n****r". That's just awful, but that's a different story for a different time. However, I was surprised to see toy companies producing toy sets that include realistic looking plastic knives. Mmmmm... Look at that blood groove and D-Guard. It was great! The sight nearly brought a tear of joy to my eye

SWAT playset? How cute. Get the kiddies at a young age hyped up about joining the future national police force. :D

Kidding. Much rather have my son playing with this than baby dolls lol.

Nerf guns? One of my best childhood memories is my father and uncle taking me to a shooting range over summer vacation. When I went back to school I did the typical "What I did on Summer Vacation" report about said shooting, and included some shell casings as proof. This gave me a great respect for the power of a firearm, and basically instilled gun safety as an instinct.

I think one of the biggest issues today is that there has been a shift from teaching about knives and guns to "teaching" that they are "bad". I think if we shifted back to actual education there would be a lot less issues, and giving a gift of a training knife/gun to a young child wouldn't be an issue, and we would see a lot less accidents.

I think most everyone on this forum would agree, but unfortunately the public school indoctrination system has an entirely different agenda probably better left for further discussion elsewhere than BF. :)

LOL, my kid has that same knife.

But realistic? Hardly. I can assure you that nothing in my collection even remotely resembles that toy. :barf:
