I am a Newbie/First Knives (Registered Today)

Made my first knives last week and am already obsessed. Found this site because I know little and want to learn everything I can about knife making. Wish I had found this before I started. So much info here. I bought some 5/32 01 Tool steel (enough for 2 blades) and started. I have don't have a belt sander/grinder (didn't know one existed) so I used what I do have, a dremel, files, emeroy cloth, drill press, hack saw etc. and this is what I came up with. I do want to buy a knife sander/grinder and stick with this. I can see me doing this for ever. Love it.

Congratulations on your first couple of knives Dave....they look pretty darn good for the tools your using and your first endeavors. Welcome to the forums.

Dave, those look outstanding for your first knives. Yes, this is a very addicting activity...

Keep at it. With these first knives looking as well as they do, you'll just get better and better with each one you make.

I too had, at one time, a hobby with modest beginnings...... *had*!!

The progression to a full blown, all consuming addiction was swift and complete. Like you, I started with files and cheap sandpaper. But look at me know, I have graduated to the ranks of a 1x30 Delta belt grinder and a drill press with sanding drums. Yes sir, I'm in the big time now! :o:o

I may not have all the fancy tools and machinery the pros use, but I have a blast and I'm happy with my efforts.... mostly.

"Keep at it"..... is advice you likely don't need, so I'll just say "challenge yourself" and "have fun". :)
 
Welcome Dave! I recognize that top knife ;) where is the arrowhead filework. Lot of good guys here and so much to learn.
