I have been a forum member and collector for a little while now and have been interested more and more in a kukri. I am pretty sure I am going to get an Ang khola chiwura. My question is how is the quality of these pieces versus the knives I now collect which is mostly the Busse family knife group? I am close to pulling the trigger, it all hinges upon the responses I get. Thanks in advance.

well I had to look up busse, but from the website I can tell you all HI are hand forged by people with generations of experience, on average their blades are monstrously over built , a common spine thickness being 3/8 to 1/2 inch, many even larger-- they repair well, they stand up to incredible punishment and are very versatile, many other forum members can tell you better than I, as some are into the martial arts, lots of outdoorsman, I am a very much dusty old homebody, and I mostly buy for the art of the steel, rather than use.
There is no knife maker anywhere in the world who compares to the quality of HI for the price.
each blade has a soul, and a character that is totally impossible to find in any modern blade other than in extremely expensive custom makers

Busse and HI aren't even on the same planet my friend. Your talking grapes and watermelons.

It's hard to describe but every HI knife I have and I have a few "Speaks". Not two are identical. You can look at the blade and know the man that made it, try that with any mass produced knife.

The minute you get one you'll regret all the time you waited to join in on these things. Resistance is futile once you get one.

Ang Khola- 53 strikes
FFBM- 65 strikes

They are completely different animals. In my opinion Busse knives while fantastic blades they don't have much soul. They are high quality but a mass produced knife.

Every single HI blade is different, even between same models, no two are alike. That in my opinion is what makes them special.

Busse are well made and deserve respect in my opinion. I also thought the same with Swamp Rat and Scrapyard. I had a Dogfather CG which was a very cool knife but when I put my equivalent blades like the HI AK Bowie up against the Dogfather there is no comparison in the balance and feel. Here is were generations of expertise really shines! You can look at them and listen to all of us but until you put one in your hands you will never know. If your really a knife nut and interested in Khukuris then treat yourself to a living working piece of art! You will like it!

To be clear I meant no disrespect for Busse really. They just aren't the same.

I have 3 Busse knives myself and I must say I love them. Jerry us a very skilled knife maker and I love his infi steel... BUT when I entered the market for a khukuri I didn't even look at Busse Combat and I am glad that I made that decision because the knives he makes and the ones HI makes really are in a different playing field. It is kinda like trying to compare formula 1 vs NASCAR yes the cars they use are top of their playing field but they are nothing alike. If you are going to get a kuk get the real thing not a KLO.

No disrespect taken bawanna:thumbup:They are really like these guys are saying different class and feel! Infi steel is top notch for its class in my opinion but you gonna pay for it.

HI is made from recycled spring steel with low tech equipment by hand, there will be some bobbles, wiggles and imperfections. If you are looking for super steels and perfection in fit and finish, these aren't for you. If you like character, tradition and uniqueness that stands out from the next guy at a fair price, try HI!

Low tech and unique, that's where I live. The whole world had gone to rocket science and left me behind and no place I'd rather be truth be told.

HI blades are handforged, differentially hardened steel. I'm fairly sure busse knives are cut and shaped with a mill. You will know the difference once you grip an HI. They possess a certain ethereal quality that can only be produced by the artisans who have literally been brought up since birth to create them.

They also cost a fraction of a price of other blades on the market that have been handforged, produced in a similar manner.

Like the others have said, totally different animals. Busses is a fine company and friendly with HI. They make excellent stuff:)
I suggest giving HI a try. Worst case scenario is that it doesn't speak to you and you pass it on to someone who it does. But I bet you'll love it:)

Well, I picked up a 15" Ang Khola that weighs 26 oz with a spine of almost half an inch. What a beast! It truly is a beauty. Now I am ordering a Chiwura Ang Khola to start my new collection. These knives are truly something else and a very welcome addition to my Busse Family collection.

I have also seen some very attractive Busse knives , but will always prefer HI-- congrats rw!

Congrats rwdata. Both knifemakers are VERY good at their area. The difference is the area. I don't personally see a need for 3 of Busse's Argonne Assault LB's even IF I could afford them. Because they will all be exactly the same. On the other hand 3 HI Sirupati each one will be a different work of art and feel differently when you swing it they feel more alive in your hand. You may then choose the one that you prefer and pass the others on to other folks to recoup your investment or like some of the greedy people here ("I R one" to quote something I was once told) just start filling up your wall with them all. LOL. Careful! as a person newly infected with HIKV I can tell you it spreads rapidly once you have a HI kuhk in your hands.

HI's and Busse's get along swimmingly! Great customer service, great product, loyal fan base.
