I have just arrived home from the SouthEastern Custom show and I can't stop thinking about whatI saw. It really disturbed me. I am apalled, annoyed, surprised and dissapointed. Here's what happened.
I arrived at the show friday afternoon to set up my table. The maker next to me on my left was already there and just about set up. We introduced each other and said see you tomorrow. So saturday comes and I get to walk around and check out other people's knives. I even checked out the maker's knives next to me. This is what apalled me.
He shows me a knife that he claims that he made. It is a knock off of a Microtech LCC D/A. He had bead blasted the blade, polished the bolsters, backbar and put carbon fiber scales on for handles. He even engraved his name on it. He told me that it was his first automatic. He told every customer that stoped at his table that he made it and that he would be making others. He was going to charge $325 for them.
Upon further inspection of his other folders, the liners looked to be some cheap steel, and paper thin, like the ones used on Chinese imports. The blades had once again been bead blasted and the handle overlays changed to micarta and carbon fiber. As I fliped throught my new issue of blade magazine I knew that I had seen this folder deign somewhere else. It was a Tom Anderson wulfpup knockoff design, like the ones sold on ebay. Once again he had put his name on it and claimed it as his own.
The thing that stinks the most about this is that this maker has recently had a large article published about him in blade magazine, althought they didn't show any of his folders. He is also a member of the KNIFEMAKERS GUILD! How can he fasely sell these folders as his own? Dosen't the Guild have standards that have to be upheld? How can he discredit his reputation as a maker by selling crap knives with his name on it?
Something has to be done. This is almost as bad as if he bought a Darrel Ralph kit and claimed it as his own.
throughlly Ticked,
Chuck
