I have just arrived home from the SouthEastern Custom show and I can't stop thinking about whatI saw. It really disturbed me. I am apalled, annoyed, surprised and dissapointed. Here's what happened.

I arrived at the show friday afternoon to set up my table. The maker next to me on my left was already there and just about set up. We introduced each other and said see you tomorrow. So saturday comes and I get to walk around and check out other people's knives. I even checked out the maker's knives next to me. This is what apalled me.

He shows me a knife that he claims that he made. It is a knock off of a Microtech LCC D/A. He had bead blasted the blade, polished the bolsters, backbar and put carbon fiber scales on for handles. He even engraved his name on it. He told me that it was his first automatic. He told every customer that stoped at his table that he made it and that he would be making others. He was going to charge $325 for them.

Upon further inspection of his other folders, the liners looked to be some cheap steel, and paper thin, like the ones used on Chinese imports. The blades had once again been bead blasted and the handle overlays changed to micarta and carbon fiber. As I fliped throught my new issue of blade magazine I knew that I had seen this folder deign somewhere else. It was a Tom Anderson wulfpup knockoff design, like the ones sold on ebay. Once again he had put his name on it and claimed it as his own.

The thing that stinks the most about this is that this maker has recently had a large article published about him in blade magazine, althought they didn't show any of his folders. He is also a member of the KNIFEMAKERS GUILD! How can he fasely sell these folders as his own? Dosen't the Guild have standards that have to be upheld? How can he discredit his reputation as a maker by selling crap knives with his name on it?

Something has to be done. This is almost as bad as if he bought a Darrel Ralph kit and claimed it as his own.

throughlly Ticked,
Chuck

Has anyone ever seen a LCC D/A kit for sale? I haven't and I sure wouldn't say I made it if I was a Guild Member. His reputation would be on the line.

If it was a Darrel Ralph kit knife it was 100 times better then those lousy Chinese clones made out of plastic, pot metal and non heat treated cheap metal.

Did he sell any? that's what i would like to know.

James

I dont think ive ever seen auto "kits", except for italian "stilletos", and parachute knives. It really irritates me if someone is redoing a cheap knockoff auto and calling it their own. They are not only cheating any customer who may buy it, as well as putting their rep on the line; but its a huge insult to the rest of us who make the knives from scratch. -- Charles

Chuck,
Yes, the Knifemakers Guild does have standards. What they don't have are Guild Police. It takes guys like you to bring it to the Board of Directors attention.

Anthony,
Be careful with that word "Kit". People will be thinking it was me, and I didn't even make that show. :)

Thanks for the replies guys. I did put a posting of this on the CKD website and the Knifemakers Guild forums. Lets see if it get any attention there. Like C. Marlowe it insults me when guys like us make knives from scratch, and the ones that don't get large spotlight articles in blade magazine. Maybe I should email them too? He does have a table this year at the New York show if I remember correctly, maybe a little tip to another Guild member might do the trick, and I know exactly who to mention it to.
Thanks,
Chuck

I am reading more and more on the forums about this kind of stuff happening. It really bothers me. Not so much for me, because I would recognize the knives for what they are. What bothers me the most is that there are a lot of people that attend these shows that would accept that this maker had done these knives himself. If/when they find out that they have been had it is going to cast a very poor light on all knifemakers in their eyes. In my opinion this crap is unethical and dishonest.

Be sure to report this maker to the Knifemakers Guild. As far as I am concerned he deserves to be flogged.

Hey Kit!
I used the lowercase k on purpose.
Everybody know your knives arent made in Taiwan......

I heard they were made in an ever more exotic location where the natives speak a strange language and have unusual customs.

Oh wait, thats KY.

:D

Anyone seeing dishonest behavior at a show should contact the folks putting on the show, hopefully they will remove him. At least they will have the opportunity. Letters to all the knife publications and organizations would also be appropriate. Once the show folks are aware of the incident, the accused should have the opportunity to plead his case. There is no time better than when it happens.

went to a gun/knife sale in Seattle one time a few years ago.

Saw a guy selling his own forged knives, yet I also noticed the scratched area near the tang...

It almost looked like the word "CHINA" had been accidentally scratched off?

Before we all jump on the bandwagon and condemn the lad, he should have a chance to prove it is truly his work. Hopefully, the guild will see it this way.

It's always better to let someone remove themselves...;)

I would hate to see it erupt/escalate/etc. and potentially tarnish striper28's reputation as well.

I agree with Kit. This kind of things can only be resolved if something speaks up about it. Personally, I am disappointed that you choose not to mention his name. I understand where you're coming from, but as a potential customer, I would value that kind of knowledge.

Chuck,

If you are sure of what you saw, you must report this man to the Knifemakers' Guild.

Personally, I am disappointed that you choose not to mention his name.

Not mentioning names is the gentleman's way of being 100% fair.

There's no need to disclose the name until a decision has been made by the Guild. Even then, it would be best to just "let it die".

Let us not forget a basic American freedom:

Innocent Until Proven Guilty

I am surprised that you are appalled!

The world is full of people like that, and since the beginning of time there have been people who prey on the ignorance of others.

There will come a day when his dishonesty will be uncovered, whether you do anything or not.

The important freedom relates to the courts. It is important yet it doesn't apply in that case because we, the general public, have no way to apply force on this person, as opposed to the courts, which can fine & imprison. I.e., the only thing we can do as a consequence of this is choose not to do business with this person.

Anyway...

How would any of us feel if someone accused us of wrongdoing? Even if it's based on seemingly condemning facts?

I'm not talking about a court, I'm talking about a jury of peers. While I understand striper28's frustration, he should take this to the organization this person "ascribes to". Naming names tarnishes two reputations, instead of just one.

If there are people out there that buy his knock-off knives, than you probably don't want their business anyway. Besides, knife buyers are repeat customers and word travels fast. It's ok if you're there and can see the actual "product", but just passing the name is poor taste.

I also agree with Mayo that there will be a time coming to separate the wheat from the chaff.

I prefer to judge for myself. I also believe in the inherent goodness of man.

Hopefully, right will be done and both striper28 and this maker will benefit in the end.
