I am completely new...

I second the mini-rukus that is my primary camping knife. Also for your sharpening needs get the sharpmaker and later start buying yourself some benchstones to practice with on your older less used knives.

Your sickness is called addiction! There seems to be no cure, only treatment to keep it under control. In it's most advanced, uncontrolable stage you buy every knife you come accross, sometimes buying several of the same make and model. The best way to keep your family intact (this sickness often leads to divorce) is to find a way to control the sickness. Pick one type or class of knife and restrict your collecting to that kind alone. The surest way to ruin is to delude yourself that you are looking for a "using" knife, I know of people with hundreds of "using" knives and they still buy several knives a day, all for use.

For 45 years I have helped people control their illness, many ot them are able, with my help, to buy ony one or two knives a month and to keep their shame conceled from all but their closest friends.

by the way, what part of the South are you from?

ya addiction...i just spent the past 4 hours looking and learning and more looking at knives... what makes you say i am from the south?

what sort of junk are we talkin 'bout... brands... style
might be helpful to see what you're buying...
maybe...
1) Buck 110 is a good solid folder for outdoor activities, timeless traditional look to it, doesnt cause quite the level of panic in people as the more tactical knives do.
2) A Fixed blade might be the way to go for outdoor/camping, etc.
as has been said Mora is affordable and highly recommended (gonna pick one up myself in the near future:D)
your credit card will be wincing in no time:D

the junky knives are just 2-3 knives no namers that i bought at walmart cause it was cheap...$10? but i say junky cause i was refering to practicing sharpening with.

i allways say to someone who doesnt know anything about knives

get a carbonsteel opinel for 5 bucks, and if ye dont like patina/colorisation etc.
get a stainless

perfect for outdoors, you can buy them in the outdoors dept of a sportstore

+1:thumbup:Good Advice!

 It will definitely do the "whoa...that is one sharp knife!" trick. Use it and learn to resharpen it (a normal sharpening stone will do). It will outcut many "tactical knives" which cost 10 times as much.
Carbon steel gives you the best performance for it's price. Also, the patina will help you pass the "I don't want to scratch up my shiny new knife" stage of the addiction.
If you get interested in fixed blades, do yourself a favour and start with a carbon steel mora for the same reasons.
These knives are no fashion items, but this way you'll be sure to have adequate performance from the start.
I wished someone had been there for me to tell me this when I started...

If you DO want a fashion item and don't plan to use it much (which is perfectly legitimate), ignore this post. The market has much to offer. Just browse through the EDC thread and see what others carry. You might find some knives you didn't know about and which you like better than your current dream knife.

ALRIGHT...

Thanks for all the warm welcome and all the great feedback and ideas...I am sure there are MANY MANY great knives out there...But i think i have narrowed it down to a few...I guess i am looking for a slightly more tactical like look folder. So maybe you can say maybe which one you would pick or if you have it already some input on that.

First up.
Spyderco Delica. Was at first attracted by its price only $80. Then I like the how the blade was shape...im sure there is a more technical name for it but how the top of the blade angles down making it look triangular.

second is.
Benchmade Apparition w/ Optimizer. Once again i say the sale price of $90 from $140. Took a look at it. liked the design. also found it was D2 steel which what people mentioned was good to start with.

Third is. Benchmade Nitrous Stryker. Just liked the look of a slimmer blade...or maybe its just a bit longer? also saw D2 steel.

Fourth and fifth is. Zero tolerance 0200 matte or 0500 matte black. I like most of the zero tolerance design...i like the 200 but i has a more convex shape...and im thinking that might be hard to sharpen? and the 500 is simple.

I wish i had the money for surefire ones...not sure how nice or good they really are or is it just cause its associated with surefire...but their knives just look amazing.

A good every day use knife need not cost a lot of money. Check out the Benchmade Griptillians if you are into knives that lock. If you want just a good slip joint knife check out some of the patterns Case offers. Eye Brand is another good one to look at. As mentioned a good Sodbuster is always nice to have.

For camping & outdoors, check out the classic - Buck 110 folder
Hard to beat for about $30.00! & like everyone else said for EDC it's hard to beat a Spyderco !
Welcome to the Blade Forums!
Warning : your wallet will get thinner the longer you stay here :D
You'll not find a better group of people online ! Also try the Wilderness&Survival section for a good camp/oudoor knife !

I've found the surefire designs to be a little "over the top". As in more flash than function, their flashlights are top-notch though. What delica are you looking at? The only one that hits the 80 dollar pricepoint I've seen is the special run ZDP-189 version. Awesome stuff to be sure but for zdp189 I'd spring for a fancier model like the calypso III. Basic delica's only run around 50-60 dollars.

1st time out and you get advise from A.G?
Talk about hitting a bullseye!

Good first choice there, ignited! The delica is a great knife, although the zdp189 ones would be hell for a newbie to sharpen. :D If you're using it for outdoor activities, you might also want to look at the bigger endura, which is almost the same price.

I'd narrow it down to either the Nitrous Stryker or the ZT 0200. It doesn't get more tactical than the ZT line if you are into that, they are also one step above the others when it comes to quality/finish. Although the Stryker is an excellent knife for a great price. But if you want the best for your money, then the ZT (any model) is it.

The blade of the ZT 200 is not convex, it is recurved. Convex refers to an edge that curves down from the flat of the blade.

The ZT 200 is also a massive, thick, heavy knife. Absolutely top quality and performance. (I've got one. :) ) But it might carry better in winter clothes than summer. :D

Ayuh, the carbon-steel blade of the humble Opinel can get incredibly sharp, almost to a monowire-level sharpness
