'I Am Legend', is the new Will Smith apocalypse movie based upon a 1954 science fiction novel of the same name by Richard Matheson. The director is Francis Lawrence, who directed 'Constantine' with Keanu Reeves.

The original story served as the basis for two other movies, 'The Omega Man' (1971) starring Charlton Heston, and 'The Last Man on Earth' (1964) starring Vincent Price. Both previous movies strayed quite a bit from the original novel, so much so that the author refused to allow his name to be on the credits for the 1964 film.

The new movie is rumored to have been written to be closer to 'The Omega Man' in it's adaptation of the novel. 'The Omega Man' was essentially a warning about the potential horrors of biological warfare.

The plot is essentially a deserted NYC, 5 years from now, 3 years after a man made disease has wiped out civilization. The lone immune survivor is an Army medical researcher who worked to find a cure but didn't find it in time, and who's blood now holds the key to humanity's survival. The city is also inhabited by the dangerous, crazy, homicidal, infected victims of the bug who can't stand the light of day and haven't quite died of the disease yet.

They were originally slated to do this film in the 90's with director Ridley Scott (Blackhawk Down, Alien, Gladiator) and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, but the project fell through due to the high cost. The new movie had a budget of $150 million and the single scene of the evacuation and quarantine of Manhattan alone cost $5 million.

The original book is a great read.

Not sure I like the sound of that movie though. Sounds like they've Hollywood-ized it.

Yeah the original book is one of my favorites too. Matheson also wrote a LOT of short stories plus a bazillion scripts for TV (twilight Zone, Outer Limits etc.)
I am looking forward to this latest version.

As much as i like Swarzenegger i'm glad the planned version with him never got off the ground.

Really for those who haven't read it try to track down the original book before seeing the new movie version.

I Loved the Omega Man as a kid. It is fun to watch on tape or DVD, you can spot all sorts of errors in it as they had to close off LA to film it and there are all sorts of people visible in the background. At one point in the opening credits Charlton Heston is speeding through town at sundown and you can spot a guy just walking down the sidewalk in the backframe. At another point he is again speeding through town and you can see, off in the distance, heavy traffic crossing the opening between two buildings. Mac

The original book is great. I was really excited to hear that this was going to be a film, then I read that Will Smith was going to play the Main character. I hope they stay as true as they can to the novel but I can almost bet that its going to be one those hyped up Hollywood movies, like I Robot or Wild West (yuck).

Big fan of the book , read it many times when I was a kid.

I do not mind Will Smith because he plays good parts for certain types of films - ID4 , I Robot , MIB - but I agree , I hope they do not try to make this all cutsie for the kids and girls and ruin it. I do not think he is a good actor for this film.

Anyway thanks for the heads-up.

I Am Legend was a great read as a kid. There's no way I'd pay money and waste time to see this Hollywood blockbuster.

you never know, it could be a decent flick. Probably not one I will see in the theater. I liked the Omega Man.

Interesting, and scary. I love the novel, and enjoyed Omega Man and The Last Man on Earth both. I have my doubts about Will Smith for this role though. This should be a very dark, desperate sort of movie, and I haven't seen Will Smith really pull that off that sort of role before.

I am a sucker for post apocalyptic scenario movies. Thats why I will be in the theater for this and Resident Evil 3.

Hey! I heard about this upcoming movie sometime ago and I'm REALLY looking forward to it, especially with it refernces to "Omega Man", one of the very few sci-fi-cum-apocalypse style movies I remember as a child.

All I can say is seeing Will Smith in such great shape makes me wanna go out there and "push it" in training a whole lot more.

The novella was great.

"Omega Man" was great.

I even liked the movie with Vincent Price, but then it's probably because he is in it.

I saw the preview last night. I like Will Smith, but I would have preferred someone else.

Yes. Resident Evil 3 looks good, I didn’t like the first one but thought the 2nd one was a great improvement (got back to the feel of the games). Definitely want to see number 3. Did anyone see 28 weeks later?

Did anyone see 28 weeks later?

Yep, loved it! In my mind, it was just as good as 28 Days... although the "feel" was different. 28 Days was more psychological suspense (I re-watched it a couple of weekends ago and while I still enjoyed it, I realized there really isn't that much gore or action). 28 Weeks was a nice 'large scale' horror/survival film.

I recommend George Romero's "The Crazies" for an early movie version of the rage infection genre...

Im gonna watch it this weekend. Never heard of the crazies, but if its George A. Romero, than it should good watching. A good scare/gore film is Buried Alive.

I call the "zombies" from 28 days later Rage'ies. :D

Oh....another good "Survival" book is The Zombie Survival Guide. Very in depth and hilarious.

i will see see it,despite the fact ,will fucking smith is in it.charleton heston was the man.i just hope he doesnt say'OH HELL NO" IN THE FIRST FIVE MINUTES OF THE FILM.
