Any suggestions? I will use it as an outdoor knife to chop small branches, vines, and saplings. I am already asking for a BK-7, but would like another, options are knives from Ranger (RD-7 or RD-9?), Ka-Bar U.S. Army, Swamprats (not sure if there are any for under $100), Cold Steels (I don't like tantos though), any other good knives would be considered. I want the spine to be pretty thick as I would like it to be really strong laterally.

Looks very good to me, can they be found any cheaper? How is the blade coating?

I just got a Cold Steel SRK yesterday...haven't had a chance to use it yet, but it's not a tanto...although they do make one. The spine has a 1/4 thick hitting surface. The sheath is quality to. At 6'' it might be a little short for cutting vines and saplings though.

The Scrapper 6, looks like the blade coating will hold up well.I like that rough looking blade coating. I saw for sale in the sale forums here, that was cheaper than the Scrap Yard site. Other than that, I don't know if you can get it cheaper.

More votes for:
Scrapper
Ranger
Bark River

New vote for:
Fallkniven (particulary the A1)

Ae you sure you're not looking for a machete? That would be my preference for the kind of chopping you describe.

I use a small belt hatchet for these chores, but I have used a machete ion the past with good results.

I already have a machete, but I want something that is sharp and can be used for cutting also. I have a hatchet and it is nice, but the cutting surface is small and it is only effective if the thing you are cutting does not give. I have alot of briers around my house that I want to clear, and the machete is not sharp enough ( I can sharpen it, but it won't hold an edge) and I have to carry around another knife to cut with, the hatchet won't work because the briers are free hanging. I want it to be able to perform as a camp knife and a light chopper.

I'll give another vote for the Scrapper 6 and RD6. If you can get some more money, I'd go for a Swamp Rat M6. I just got one myself and i love the blade. See if you can find one used here in the For Sale forum or Wanted to Buy forum.

Scrapper or Ranger? Also, can you find a Swamp Rat for under $100? What is the toughest and sharpest? I have a Ka-Bar short and I can't get it very sharp because the edge is too obtuse so I can't use a system, I have to freehand it and it just won't get as sharp as I want to.

"I have alot of briers around my house that I want to clear, and the machete is not sharp enough..."

You could always have the machete custom sharpened. But I'd check out Condor Knife & Tool for a cheap, extremely sharp machete-like blade. A much thinner blade stock works best for cutting vines & such I've found...

It is not just that it is not sharp enough, I want to be able to carry it comfortably and be able to use it as a camp knife (cutting food, shaving sticks, cleaning game, maybe even just a little throwing :) (that is why I want it to be laterally stong and it must also have a thick tip) ).

+ 1 for the scrapper 6 . i have had mine for a couple of weeks now and love it, coating holds up well .It also has a lifetime warranty against all major damage!

Price also depends on the size you are looking for. I'm a big fan of the Ontario Randall Rat knives in D2. I have the Rat-3, which is one tough small fixed blade and also the Rat-7, which is one tough large fixed blade. The Rat-7 is about $110 but what's $10 between friends. You can't got wrong with either of these knives. Of course, you can't go wrong with most any of the knives previously mentioned.

Regards
