I am looking for a folding diving knife HELP!

The title says it all. I want a dive knife folder. I have yet to see one I like of any quality. Any suggestions?

Try Mission Knives www.missionknives.com
(I think)...they make an Elishewitz design folder made (Again, I think) in titanium.
Probably expensive, though.

I haven't been there lately and am relying on 59 year old memory.....or is it 58 ?

David,

I, for one, do not care for titanium knives. Mission makes the best Ti knives available but...they are still titanium. They tend to be difficult to sharpen AND do not seem to hold an edge well, an odd combination of traits. You will find that they are quite expensive also.

I think a reasonable choice would be one of the Voyagers from Cold Steel. Lots of options as far as size, blade shape and serrations. The AUS-8 steel they use is pretty stain resistant and the Zytel handle is more or less impervious to the effects of salt water. They do not have any washers at the pivot to get "gunked up" with sand/debris. They are easily found on the net at very reasonable prices so you will probably not get too bent if your knife ends up on the bottom of the ocean like dive knives have a tendancy to do.

If you really want to spend some cash on a dive knife, go for the Sebenza.

Hope this helps,
Derek

David,

If you want to keep your cost down look at the Snap It from Spyderco.

I attach it to my D ring on my BC and it works great! If you do a lot of ocean dives make sure you wash it is fresh water when done and spray it off with WD-40.

Here is the text as stolen from Spyderco's site.
Snap-It C26
Originally created for diving, this knife design offers a viable alternative to pocket clip carry. The wichard-style snap shackle at the top of the knife allows for remarkably secure attachment and is big enough to fasten to a D-ring or belt loop. This quick-deployment style is especially useful in situations when a conventional pocket clip would be less accessible (such as when in a sitting position) and allows for detachment and one-hand opening in a single motion. The hollow-ground blade clears the snap shackle when cutting and features the Spyderco Trademark Round Hole, powerful SpyderEdge serrations and a substantial belly. Both sides of the handle are inlaid with KRATON for secure grip even when hands are wet, and the knife includes a deep finger choil for improved cutting control. Bringing together key features in one highly effective tool, the Snap-It accommodates right-hand use and is ideal for hiking, boating or virtually any other active situation

Also I just saw your profile. I am a Dive Master and am always looking for a new dive buddy. So let me know if you want to dive Florida!

Here's a thought: SOG and Myerchin are gaining a rep for very-well-tempered 440A. I know Myerchin uses it due to stain resistance for marine use, and I know the SOG Jet-edge is a pretty good folder. IF the Jet-edge is also that "quality 440A" it'd be my first choice.

But I also have to question "why a folder"? If you want a small near-stain-proof fixed-blade in a sheath that can be rigged up any way you need it, get a Myerchin A500, see also www.myerchin.com - unfortunately the Myerchin folders I've seen so far are very stiff and difficult to open one-handed, esp. underwater and/or with gloves on. If that's changed, those would work too.

Well, if you turn on the way back machine, you'll remember that sypderco used to make a neat folding knife/prybar with a nylon line cutter that didn't require opening the knife. Haven't seen one in a while though.

Speaking of dive knives, where do you guys wear yours? I used to carry mine on my leg, but I kept kicking the damn things off. On the thigh it kept on getting tangled, now I wear mine inverted on my left BC strap.

Look at David Boye knives. He's got folders with cast cobalt blades. The blades are impervious to salt water. They aren't as inexpensive as some of the above mentioned knives though.

Just to throw suggestions into the pot, ceramic knives are another option. I think Boker makes a ceramic folder for example....

Patrik,

I wear my fixed blade on my BC's power inflater. It is attached with black electical ties. My Snap-It attaches to my D Ring at the bottom of my BC.

Never wear a dive knife on your leg, ever, for any reason. It is the dumbest place to wear a knife as you can get it caught up in mono-filament, it causes cramps to that leg, gets caught in wrecks and falls off.

Also the knife from Spyderco you refered to is called the diver probe. It was a very long stainless folder and had a ruler on it. It also had a flat tip and was very cool but to big and silly looking.

Yep. I learned to wear mine there too, from trial and error unfortunately. People here tend to wear theirs on their legs, and that's how I originally learned to do it. Until I lost my third dive knife. From then on it was on the inflator on the left side, as you said. The leg is definitely the wrong place.

I just carry a (relatively) cheap dive knife with an enamel coated blade. The edge rusts a wee bit if I don't keep it oiled, but the rest is pretty much protected.

(And since I have a kevlar BC, I don't worry _too_ much about puncturing it.

I got the Spyderco like Mike suggested. Ooooooo bot this is exactly what I needed! Thanks Mike and yes I would love to go diving with you.

Where do you dive and what is your experience level. Don't get me wrong, I just would like to know what to expect from a dive buddy when I go meet them for the first time. And if we do meet bring some cool knives for me to drool on.

Hey David,

Glad you like my suggestion. As I said in my post I am a Dive Master with the following Certs.

Wreck, Search & Rescue, Equipment, Night, Advanced, Cavern, Master and a few others.

I understand your reason for asking so no problem there.

Hope this qualifies me to be a good buddy!

Hello fellow Aquanauts!

I also keep my knife on my power inflator with zip ties (it's a UK Fusilier -- I like it alot!). Anyways, you always know where it is and you don't have to worry about your weight belt getting hung on it if you have to drop it in an emergency the way you do if you have it on your leg.

Another thing I keep in my BC pocket is a pair of EMT shears. I hate to commit this blasphemy but there are times a knife isn't the ideal cutting tool and scissors are (the opposite applies too!) I have had good luck with them on monofilament line and even Spiderwire.

Dive Safely,

Clay
