I am looking for a good "travel" knife

Like those above have said, I would go with an SAK. For most EDC tasks, especially while traveling, a slipjoint will perform just fine. Plus, the Vic Cadet is slim, light and provides other tools along with the knife.

If you're still set on having a dedicated knife with a lock, I would recommend a Spyderco Ladybug. You can get one for about $25. It fits on your keys or in your change pocket. Very sharp, great steel and good ergonomics. Plus, non-knife people will consider it "cute." Seriously, my mother who strongly dislikes knives now wants me to get her a purple ladybug. :D

Go Spyderco.

You can choose from the Cricket, Lava, Cat, Chicago, Ladybug, Dragonfly, Leafstorm, Urban, Poliwog, Spin, Kiwi, Kopa etc.

Spyderco is the master of smaller folders.

after reading that i just want to get out of illinois even more. but in my town (elk grove, right against the o'hare airport fence for a location reference) i called the non-emergency number and asked about fixed and folder knife laws. the officer, i can only imagine it was a leo, that picked up said 4" (max) anything as long as it's not a switchblade. but if i remember correctly the illinois blade length is 3.5". how much can towns enforce that law if i'm not from there, just passing through, and get searched for some reason?

To its full extent, if the DA wants to. Avoid situations that would get you searched.

Also, the definition of "switchblade" can be rather broad, generally including butterfly knives and interpreted to include knives that can be flicked.

I would recommend that the OP consider the Boker Hyper, with blade length under 3". It is a lot of knife in a small package.

If your goal is to have something that is scalpel sharp, not spendy and still lets you fly below the radar, its hard to beat a SAK.

SMKW has a Victorinex SAK single blade, locking, one handed opening, with a clip no less. Under $30 (price varies by pe v. ce). I just ordered one, and since this is a special, I may get backups as well.

From the PDF that Frogger2 posted, it looks like Center Line, MI is crazier than Loves Park, IL. Center Line says no one may carry or use a knife of any kind, which makes me wonder how people cook or cut their food.

For travel, I'd go with a SAK or maybe one of the smaller Leathermans. If you're really worried about blade length, you could try a Buck Metro.

+1 on a SAK. It doesn't have a clip or lock (although some do), but it is very sheeple friendly and inexpensive so if it does get pilfered, it's no great loss.

SAK for sure. Nothing in the world wrong with a liner lock that is made right.

I vote for a Swiss Army knife. I always pack one when I travel, and the extra tools and blades come in handy if you can only have one knife. BTW, keep the blade under 3.5" and you should be fine just about anywhere. Also, Swiss Army knives are very nonthreatening.

Swiss Army Knives are perfect for travel. Literally not a single person is afraid of them.
