I am looking for a survival type knife, not a folding knife (ive got that covered)but something like an SRK.
I think that an SRk is a good knife for the money. This is my choice right now.
Are there any suggestions to a good, solid knife under $100?
Thanks,
mason

Welcome to the forums FLY GUY.

The SRK is a great bang for the buck knife. I don't think you can go wrong with one IMO.

Cold Steel SRK. I have one. You need to.

GREAT knife, GREAT value.

I traded away an SRK a couple of years ago and immediately regretted it. Probably one of the best buys out there IMO. You might also consider one of the Fallkniven brand.

Welcome to the Forum!

I can go one better than the SRK. I have an extra Cold Steel Recon Scout that I will sell for $95 shipped. This is the shorter version of the Trailmaster, only with a black blade. I have sharpened it a little, but no marks anywhere except the edge. I really never even got the factory bevel down as thin as I would have liked. Knife is in great condition, near mint.

Consider also the Fallkniven knives.
Very well executed knives and a good bang for the buck.

The CS Recon Scout and SRK are both excellent knives as are the Fallknivens.

The one I have is the USAF Pilot's Survival knife. I think its a good stout knife with a sharpening stone in the sheath. I would like to get a Falkkniven F1, the Swede's Air Force knife, but its a little out of my budget right now. The USAF knife cost me about $25 with S&H. The F1 is at its cheapest is around $50.

You might also look at the Becker knife and Tool Campanion. Very Solid.

I had an SRK. I traded it for A Kabar USMC. The SRK is really heavy duty. It is so thick it is hard to actually cut stuff. If you want A prybar or something to cut out of A car with the SRK is great. I prefer something A little thinner. For an excellent slicer with the same steel as ths SRK check out the Cold Steel Bushranger. They are very nice.

Another vote for the Becker. I might have bought one of these instead of my Busse Basic #5 if I had known more about them at the time.
I'd recommend the Busse to you, but it's about $160 (and well worth it IMO). The Becker may be just as good (from what I hear, not what I know), and can be had for about $70-80, I believe.

MDP, Head west until you hit the ocean. Look up and down the beach and you can't miss me. I'm the guy with the knife.

Seriously tho, if ya make a journey out to the coast one day, drop me an e-mail... First beer is on me.

Do you car about bulk? If you want compact I would look at the Fallkniven F1. If you want strength I would look at the Campanion.

Yup, The Cold Steel Recon Scout IS also a very good choice. I also have one of those. It is a VERY STOUT knife.

Velitrus,

So you live in Washington State, near the Coast, huh? Do you know where Aberdeen is? That's where I'm at. Do you know where Grays Harbor College is? That's where I work.

What was that about a "first beer"?.

I a agree with most of the above. Much depends on what you plan to use this survival knife for. For your budget, to truly "survive" with this knife, I like the Fallkniven A-1. A less expensive sharpened pry bar is the SRK. I have both and prefer the A-1 but really like the SRK for the price and as a user/beater. Fallkniven is excellant corrosion resistant VG-10 whereas the SRK is carbon steel, if that's important to you.

The Campanion is a great knife with the only noticable drawback being that the handle is not that conducive to reverse grip hammering with the spine. For "camping" type uses, it's probably a better bet than the SRK.

Good suggestions, all. You might also look at Grohmann's (made in Nova Scotia) belt knives, or check out Colorado Cutlery (if you can find their website, and if they're still around). I'd probably go with my SRK or maybe the original Becker Campanion that lives in the truck if I could choose only one knife for survival.
