I am looking for a "tactical" knife

I vote the Spyderco Civilian because it just looks super intimidating!
Especially the serrated version. I'd probably get one myself for
collection purposes, but they are a little pricey (for me).

autos arent that great inmop, at least buy something you can legally carry every now and then if you feel like. a regular bradley alias 1 is an awesome knife, and you could carry it legally in ca if you wanted to. the civilian is also really nice. spyderco police 3, military and chinook 3 are worth looking at too.

there is also the crkt hissatsu folder, its an assisted opener so it would be legal to carry.

I love the blade profile on this knife, but I think the handles leave a bit to be desired. They just look cheap to me and flimsy.

What are the benefits of having a tactical blade, besides having it look cool?

Well, a grippy handle means it won't fly out of your hand when yours are slippery.
Black may cut down on reflectons, a possible plus.
One hand opener is self-evident.
Handle notches or serrations enhance point #1 above.
Opening hole or stud facilitates faster speed than a two hand opening groove.
Pocket clip accentuates immediate access, and n speed of deployment.

For collection - the Spyderco Civilian - that blade is nasty

For SD carry - this really depends on your fighting style (you are competently trained in knife use for SD aren't you? - not just strutting around with a bunch of knives to look intimidating) - plus a damn good defense lawyer - although they're a bit bulky for EDC.

newsflash: you dont ever have a tactical blade unless you know how to use it. skill determines if a blade will be tactical not a model name or design. unless your nutnfancy of course. anything is potentially tactical to that fellow.

Well said, George. The chances of you ever using a knife for self defense are slim to none and even if you did you'd more than likely be cut up as much, or more than, your opponent.

Course if you do end up in a knife fight send us the pics :)

Not necessarily true. There are some knives that (avoiding the work "tactical" because it's relatively meaningless in this context) are built for different things. Take the Spyderco Civilian, a William Henry, and a Benchmade Grip. You have three different knives with a vast range of designed use.

Civilian: This knife is designed to be used for self defense by those with little or no training. It is a last ditch weapon and designed as such. Not EDC use, nothing other then inflicting as much damage as possible with the least amount of skill.

William Henry: Rolex of a knife. Designed from top tier materials with obnoxiously high tolerances to be the perfect gents EDC/dress up knife.

Benchmade Grip: A standard EDC not afraid of pickle sandwiches, boxes, rope, wire, wood, etc.

I would suggest either the Ka-Bar heavy bowie or a product from Himalayan Imports. They make very nice Khukris which are traditionally used by Gurkhas (nepalese army) and would be very nice in a collection.

I know a lot of knives are marketed as SD knives but they never mention you have to be in close to do the work and they never mention you are probably going to get cut up too.
If you are really worried about SD then get that Concealed Carry permit.
Good luck to you on picking the right knife.

Granted, you'll probably get cut, but in a SD situation, who get's cut less wins. The options? Yup, concealed carry (yes, I have one and carry, a G19 AND a Military), but what about those that can't? Is a knife not an option? FOR SURE, if BG has a blade and you have nothing, you WILL get cut more.

the handles are quite solid, the knife can be used as an effective impact weapon when closed.

btw i just love the typical nonsense responses once again when it comes to someone asking about a knife for sd....comments like "just get a ccw permit"(even though the guy lives in california, a state which is known to not give ccw permits), or "knives are bad for sd" ....pretty soon someone will chime in recommending a pepper spray and a whistle instead of the knives, and im sure we will have a few more people who will tell you to just go get a gun instead or just shoot whoever you need to defend yourself from :jerkit::jerkit::jerkit::

I think the 710 is fast and delicate enough for what I would need a tactical knife for. Last ditch when your in a grappling situation with a bat or whatever I can deploy a 710 dazed with my eyes closed as fast as an auto, cut free and run like hell (with my emergency whistle blaring). I also carry pepper spray in a sharpie type pen canister that I would use first.

A ZT300 or BM 760 or more HD knife might be good if your expecting body plate armor or get in a fight with a pissed off bull. ??

I have been caught with nothing a couple of times in retail robberies (and have a crooked nose and ear to show for it) given the option it would be nice to have the option of a blade even if I didn't use it.

The best knife is the one in your pocket.

all these people who say a knife is useless in a SD situation, lets see what they say when 4-5 people have em on the ground kicking the crap outta em and beating them with a baseball bat.

If you were on the ground and being beaten with a baseball bat and kicked by 4-5 people, producing a knife would only get you a bat to the head.

When confronted by 4-5 people, that is when you start shooting. if they get you to the ground and start pummeling you, you are a goner.
