I am new to knives and looking for one to carry.

Self defense(with any knife) is a can of worms that's been fried, diced, caramelized, steamed, boiled, mashed, extruded, drawn, hanged by the neck until dead, electrocuted and most famously Shot by a handgun that is guaranteed to stop a guy, it's a 12 gauge caliber with a 200 round clip, has a spot light and bayonet attached ;). So I will not in a box, not with a fox not even in top of a pile of rocks eat the green eggs and ham!

That being said, the 943 is a pokey piece of steel, I believe in pokey steel, I believe in pokey sticks and I believe in copper, lead, aluminum and by golly I even believe in plastics for self defense, they are no magic charms, though they can feel like it.

IMO a properly sharpened 943 can poke and slice quite well.

Ha.

That first bit was hilarious. Are you saying you would not use a knife for self defense? I do carry a revolver under my suits/sportcoats, under my shoulder, but I started thinking about getting a knife for a situation in which someone was suddenly on top of me and I was unable to reach across my chest to my gun.

I'd prefer completely loyal invisible ninja bodyguards that can see the future, and I'd like them armed with instant kill weapons.

Dangit! I said I would not talk about self defense. :)

Knives are just fine for slicing and poking meats, veggies and pretty much anything soft...

Nobody here is going to recommend carrying a 10 ounce knife. The idea that weight = strength is outdated. Some of my most used folders are the BM Griptilian, Spyderco Endura, Paramilitary 2, Manix 2 lightweight, Ontario RAT 1, and ZT 550. I trust the locks on all these knives for all knife-related tasks. For $300 you can get an Endura, Griptilian, PM2, and RAT 1 and test your preferences

Any of these would likely do it for you;

Spyderco Manix 2, Para 2, Super Leaf, Military - Titanium if you want a heavier frame lock or G10 if you want lighter and grippier
ZT0550 or 0560
Emerson mini CQC15 or mini Commander
Chris Reeves large Sebenza with the regular blade or large Sebenza Insingo the one with the Micarta scales is pretty cool

My Votes for a Strider SNG!!

(Alot of "flavors" to choose from)..

This knife will last you a life-time.. and if it dosn't they have a bomb-proof warranty in which they'll replace/fix yours for you for the price of shipping!!..

Alot of people might say Chris Reeve sm./Lg. sebenza 21.. and although I have both ... I still favor my striders...they feel more "substantial" in the hand.. more of an ACTUAL TOOL... (harder use)... if you may... then a sebenza though the sebby will still slice very nice...

all-around great knife for your life.. ---> strider sng... (smf if you have huge hands)

Please, do yourself a favor and don't buy many "cheaper" knives...

You will be MUCH happier with (1) "expensive" knife.. $300+

I think what he's saying is that if you want to get into self defense, you ought to go over to practical/tactical and read some historic threads. He doesn't want to discuss it AGAIN. You might be new here, but that discussion is like 9mm vs. .45 in some circles.

Unless of course you get it wrong on the first go. :)

I stand by my recommendation of the byrd cara cara 2 with G-10 handle. You can always pick something else up afterwards if you are unhappy and you have a better idea of what you are unhappy with. You might discover that you actually are not interested in folders at all but would rather have a fixed blade and a trainer for practice drills. Or you might find you prefer smaller or larger knives. Or you might discover you really don't want any part of the knife fighting business at all. Pulling a knife has a tendency to raise the stakes in any altercation.

Benchmade Adamas.

Or, if you want something much smaller, Benchmade Mini Griptillian. I have both and love them.

Maybe a hogue EX01? Great knives, under rated in my opinion. They are tough and about the size you are looking for. Here is a crappy cell phone of a couple;

i don't know if high priced knives are going to make you super happy. you can buy cheaper knives that get the job done and still be happy with it.
i'd hate to figure after buying a gibson i don't like playing guitar. :p

Very interesting.

How are their rates?
