This is a good place to learn about steel and knives and lots of nice folks...
JFK - I have emailed them and I believe I may be looking into one of their strops. Thanks a lot.
Londinium - I like Butterfly Swords, short swords, fencing swords, and Katanas. I think fencing is awesome, I was thinking of joining a club. The steel swords have been made out of the past 10 - 15 years is really impressive. I can't wait to see what comes out over the next five years. I have a feeling swords are about to level up in quality.
Cool,I like all of those things as well, you would enjoy fencing it's really good, I love it. I mainly do historical fencing but I dabble in some Epee as well, tried foil for a few weeks and didn't like the rules. I Joined Scholagladiatoria in London but had to take care of my son on their training days, so I opened up my own club and held it on friday nights and the weekend instead, then the lockdown came and I had to close my club.
so right now I don't do any HEMA fencing except private training, sometimes I go to my uncles dojo, he does Kendo and Judo there, pretty cool actually, it's built completely out of wood by his Russian contractor friends, has a traditional sauna and steam room in it as well. I should use it more often actually.
spare money? hell,my wife has that. my knife money falls in the cost of living category.Leave while you can !!! Just kidding. Welcome. kiss all your "spare" money Goodbye.
Thanks guys. I have loved knives since I have had a memory. My hands certainly show I've loved knives for a long time. They have some scars. My grandfather always had a small Wenger Swiss Army knife. You know, the one that is basically a finger nail kit? He used the scissors for everything but Christmas presents, which he'd precisely open. I'd constantly try and take his knife from him. He passed away a few years ago unfortunately. When I went through his dresser, I found his knife he was using the last years of his life, plus an identical new one in a box. I use the one he used till this day, and I don't touch the other one. He was a veteran. My father and my uncle's were hunters. BUCK knife was something I never heard the end of. So for those reasons, knowing how often you can need one, being into tactical things, martial arts, etc... I have carried a knife my whole life. About 6? years ago I discovered the Esee 5. That basically changed knives for me. I got into fixed blades instantly. I have an Esee 5, 6, CM6, Candiru (for my lady), and my Izula, which was the green one, and is gone. I lost it. It messed me up, so I recently ordered a Bark River Mini Aurora Hunter, to replace it. I loved my Izula. I had to get something decent to replace it's sentiment haha. I got something slightly larger, but I like it a lot as an EDC. I needed to try a new steel as well. I'll go through the other knives I have and let you know. Nothing special. I have that Hanwei straight blade not historically accurate ninja sword. I am into swords also. I have a HuaWei Unokubi Zukuri on the way. I've thought long and hard of which sword I want if I unfortunately, actually have to fight someone. This will be my SHTF sword. I joined this forum to basically stop being a stalker. I have been reading these forums for at least a couple years on and off now. A LOT of what I've learned comes from here. Why on Earth did I not join? Well, I was busy. I am learning the differences of steel at this point. I am just beginning to learn the components. And when I say that, I mean I am beginning to read about the actual percentage of different elements used and why they are used, not just in blade steel, but in all the materials. I should probably know what I am dealing with, because I am starting to make knives. Someday I hope to be good at it. At the moment I am practicing my sharpening skills(different techniques and just practicing in general). I want to be a black smith basically, who does it all from hand down to the last strop. But, in the meantime I will learn with help from machines. I took the tools I had and bought some more. I have made a small shop in my apartment. I am making sheaths and I'm going to make knives. I have only made two so far, and those were a few years ago. They also were not heat treated. Someday soon I will get a Gold Membership. I read there is no discussion of business, so I won't speak to much about that. I am looking to not work for another person other than myself ever again though. Let's put it that way. I can talk all night, but my amazing daughter has a shit ton of energy at 6AM. Goodnight!
