I'll explain. (BTW I'm venting here........................)

I was supposed to have a total hip replacement last June. 3 days before the surgery I got a call telling me I was anemic (probably due to the Naproxen I'd been woofing down several times a day) and we'd have to postpone the cutting event till my hemoglobin numbers were in the "normal" range. Ughhhhhhhh.

As you might suspect I was in "some" pain before agreeing to the surgery and now it was going to be postponed indefinitely while I took iron supplements 3 times a day and blood tests monthly and a painkiller called Tramadol to replace the Naproxen (who knew that Naproxen causing intestinal bleeding? Not me that's for sure). The good news was that I'd been getting physical therapy a couple times a week to prepare for the procedure and that would continue as well. I was getting stronger, more flexible and increasing my endurance, to say nothing of losing about 25 pounds. That was all good. I'm now taking Epogen (that blood enhancer that gets bike racers banned for life) to get my final hemoglobin numbers wayyyyyyyyyyyyy up. Don't even think of asking what Epogen costs. So it looks like it's a go this time.

Long story short, now 6 months later, my surgery is scheduled for December 22nd. Quiet time at the hospital so I'm told I'll get lots of attention while in there for 3 days and then while getting 3 days of follow on "intensive" therapy before heading home. When I told my physical therapist about the "intensive" therapy she laughed and said they weren't ready for me and I'd be walking, pain free in that joint the day following the surgery (which will be an advanced anterior approach with much less muscle cut I'm told. So you heal weeks faster).

I can't wait for this to happen....................... so I can get back to my life, my shop, my friends etc.

Thanks for letting me rant.

I like the taste of a good beef steak more than the pills. I hope it all works out for you .Think good thoughts like knives and things !

Thank you all for your kind thoughts.......................

I've never been so ready to be cut upon in my life

Good luck, and godspeed with your recovery. My father just had a hip replacement back in October and he is amazed at how good his hip feels now.

Corey,
You are not alone.
I have had my share of goof ups like that with them giving me meds that screw something else up!
I want to wish you Gods speed on you operation and I may just be in the cutting room about the same time getting a Bulged disc in my neck operated on. LOL So I will be thinking good thoughts for you on the 22nd.
Take care Buddy!

Again, thanks for all your kind thoughts and good wishes.................... can't hurt might help.

I feel like I've run a marathon getting to this point. It's not that the pain is so intense. Not that at all................ It's more like gravity, a constant, relentless force that, once in a while asserts itself with a sharp twinge, usually when I'm asleep. I then wake with a WTF over! But the date is getting closer and the epogen is working like a charm as a modern, costs more then a car, wonder drug is supposed to.

Lawrence........... I'll think good thoughts for you and your disc going forward. Anything cervical scares the crap outta me even though my wife had one and never missed a beat. Even though Chicago is kind of a knifemaking wasteland (other then a few who I'd like to meet up with someday soon), the Doctors and hospitals here know how to put their blades to expert use, which is a blessing in itself.

Corey,
I was in the sausage tube for the MRI just about two hours ago and hopefully I can make the appointment with the saw bones tomorrow to see if he thinks he can do any good for me and not just his bank account. That'a why I go to UCLA. They are a teaching hospital and everyone is on salary.

It helps keep things straight up!

Thanks Ken...............

Monday is getting close REALLY fast.

Hopefully I'll be all healed when the spring Janesville show rolls around

First off thanks for all the good wishes

I'm home and, stunningly, REALLY mobile. I ache some but have good drugs for that and this will cease over the next few weeks. I was out bed the day following my surgical encounter and took a lap around the floor accompanied by 2, 120 pound, sub 30 years old, perky blond, physical therapists.............. If I'd gone down I wonder if the 2 of them combined could have levered me up.

The food was great (apple strudel - dyam!!!!), the bed comfy and the staff, unrelentingly, cheerful, except the one kinda surly nurse who threatened to have the catheter reinstalled if I didn't whiz before the end of her shift! That threat loosened things right up. I thought about pissing the bed that instant while she was standing there looking so fierce and in command. That would have shown her huh?

So............... best part - Anesthesia ( I never knew what hit me). Worse part(s) - Sleep interruptions.

My wife is being a peach........ and I'm in great shape considering everything. I have some pics but those need scanning before I can post them. Now I get home care. Nurses and therapists coming out to tell me what I need to be doing (for the 40th time.....) and telling me that my basement's gym is SPECTACULAR!!! Ohhh yeah they take my temperature and blood pressure too.

Thanks again. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas.

Corey

Good to hear you're doing well, my friend. Keep up on the PT. It's entirely the difference between recovering and NOT recovering!
