I Am Thinking of Applying a Satin Finish to My SFNO

But I have a an important question.

I am thinking of using Klean Stripper

Peter, be very carefull with that stuff, it's HIGHLY toxic.

It says right on the bottle that it causes cancer, not that it may, but that it DOES.

there is no way that you can get the sanding/grinding lines straight unless the metal is bare and without slabs to sand around. if the handle slabs were gone then you could sand the flats easily and evenly. i would make you a wager that you knife guy would not even attempt to do the job without removel.
the other option to change finish wiothout removing handles is to do a dblcut finish.

Just remember, a double cut finish will remove the Busse logo, if that makes a difference to your decision.

Holy crap, nasty stuff :barf:

Thanks everyone for the advice and information. I am going to call the shop and get a price on a double cut finish. I am still not sure what to do yet. If I go double cut I am going to do a little bit of coating removal myself. ;) :D

Is that stuff even legal? I called five hardware stores and they no longer stock it because of toxicness. I thought it was dangerously corrosive at worst! :D

I think I read somewhere that citristrip will do the job as well. Might wanna look around and see if anyone else has talked about it.

To remove the black coat off, from the full-flat grind blade and with the smooth coat is a lot easier, IMHO.

:D

Ok, I tried wrapping a section of my EU-17 Magnum in a nail polish remover soaked cloth. I let is sit for about one hour and it did nothing, nada. What am I doing wrong? I heard you have to let the blade sit in a container filled with the liquid and then wait. Can anyone confirm this?

Use the knive until the coating wears off on its own. Why send such an intricate coating to an early and undeserved grave?

Was it acetone? There are nail polish removers that do not contain acetone. Just buy the container that says acetone on it.

Just go to a paint or hardware store, They will have it. And thick rubber gloves and open air are a must.

thombrogan, I am not sure why I don't do that. :D

Peter, I totally understand.

I removed the finish of a brand new BA3 simply for the reason that I did not like the finish, and I knew I would never sell it anyway. It is now my main user.

I've been doing some searching on bead blasters. They're pretty cheap at Harbor Freight $40.00 to $70.00. I have the air compressor so that's not an issue. I'm thinking when I catch up on some things, that I'll make the investment. I've read that the nail polish remover trick works pretty well. Maybe you just need something stronger. The hardware store is a good idea. They should have something in the paint department that will do the trick. Get a mask and some gloves and do it in a well ventilated area.

Keep us posted! :D

Peter, any luck with removing this coating?

I have not tried anything new yet.

I am sure it would come off just fine seeing how it scuffed up after it was forcibly placed in it's cardboard sheath.

Peter...please tell me you're doing before and after pictures!
