I was killing time today while out in the field at work, and I was close to a local gunstore/taktikool outfitter. So we stopped in, my pardner was lookin' for a new belt, etc, so as we are surfing the sea of tactical gear, I spots me some knife counter action. Stroll over and start looking, all I see are a couple of fixed blades, and a boatload of tac folders, black assisted opening, bumpy jobs. We all know the knives, no since in listing them here.

So, as my pard is payin' the man, I ask the guy behind the counter, "You guys ever thought about stocking or becoming a local dealer for ESEE knives?"

"Who?"

"ESEE, used to be R.A.T. Cutlery, just split from Ontario a short time back."

"Buddy, I been selling knives for 20yrs, and I never heard of any of them names you just said. Must not be real famous or real good, one usually leads to the other."

As he was telling me about all his years of experience selling knives for 20yrs, he was showing his buddy behind the counter how, his new tac folder has assisted opening and could be got out and used like this <stabs air> or like this <slices in a reverse grip> or like this, you get the point. I kinda stared for a minute, with several thoughts and comments running through my head. I stopped, turned and took a slow look around the store. I decided to keep my mouth shut, let my buddy pay, and leave.

After 20yrs of selling knives, you would think there would be more than just 2 different brands in the counter, wouldn't you?

They tend to hold themselves to a higher level of tactical awareness in that store, as I frequent it about twice a year, it seems like they get cooler, and we just get dumber.

Just a little story and rant. Thought ya'll might want to hear.

nice...

jeff and mike will just have to keep changing the name to evade the mall ninjas and tacticool veteran sales reps. :)

Moose,

For someone who i a moose and a beckerhead you're not a bad guy. It can be painful to deal with tactifools. It sounds more like he's spent 20yrs on the internet than selling knives. You probably made the right decision not speaking.

God bless,
Adam

Dude, don't you know the most knowledgeable people work in retail stores? How dare you question their authority!

Some people on these forums appreciate knives and such at a level that even veteran knife counter workers may never reach. Think about it.

In a lot of places there is a MUCH greater premium placed on finding a salesman/woman that can entertain the general public and relieve them of some of their money than knowing anything about what they are selling (and CERTAINLY there is no need to teach them anything about what they are NOT selling). Limiting the options/choices speeds this process along.

Many people on a forum will buy some number of knives in a year. Stores like the one you describe generally sell knives to people that will buy a very small number of knives in a lifetime...and these people will become educated by this guy as he sells them those few knives.

On the up side....most people that buy from him will be VERY happy because they bought the best knife in the world...and the salesman even said so! If you keep the pond small enough...everyone feels like a big fish!

I'm not so sure. I've loved knives as long as i can remember and didnt know jack until i joined the forums a few months ago. That was about 20 years of buying crap and being dissatisfied, so i can understand his lack of knowledge. But, i do believe a man who makes his living selling knives should know a thing or two by now.

When did Ethan go to work in retail? I just talked to him on the phone and he didn't tell me anything about that. In fact Mike and I are meeting up with him and his son somewhere in Arizona tomorrow night for dinner.

I do want to add, this store almost exclusively is the equipment dealer for the local law enforcement community. Said so on the door.

Fantastic, eat some steak for me. Wish I coulda joined ya'll, but alas, someone has to stand post at Ethan's front gate. Gotta keep the hordes of fans from overrunning it.

Reminds me of the song Alice's Restaurant. Using up all types of cop equipment they had hanging around the police station.

Moose,

The only horde of fans that'd be knocking on Ethan's gate oscillates. You don't have to worry about them. They're just blowing wind.

i actually had a similar experience. i went to a knife shop and asked if they had an esee knives. they look at me like im crazy, and then say " um...do you know where we can see one" so i pull out my patina coated izzy. they fondle the knife for a while, then one guy says " wow thats a sweet little blade, we just dont carry many customs in the store" i didnt know how to respond to that one
