hi. i bought a SS handle harpy yesterday. i really like this knife, and will be carrying it quite often despite my disdain for SS handles. the knife is rather small, but very solid.

i just had a few questions. is the harpy a discontinued spyderco?? also, after taxes, it came out to $97. is that good price for a harpy from a local store?? ive seen some internet sites offering the harpy for like $150.

also is the harpy designed more for self defense or more for utility?? it can do both obviously, but i was wondering if anyone had any additional information about the knife.

peace, out.

MSRP on the SS Harpy is $118, so you did well for a brick and mortar, but I have seen it on the net for around $70 plus shipping.

I think the Harpy was designed for utility (i.e., maritime use), but the blade shape works well for self-defense.

I have two SS harpies. They are great knives.
Sal did mention in the Spyderco book that he did not design the Harpy as a weapon, and did not like the idea of it being used as one. Since the blade tends to "grab" at what it cuts, he said it would be likely to slide out of the hand of the person using it as such.

Of course, it could be used as a weapon.

Me personally, I find it esp. useful for opening very tough packaging, particularly hard clamshell types. The blade safely penetrates, and I can pull-cut easily without the danger of the knife slipping out of the cut suddenly.
